I am re-posting this here just to get perhaps a more technical response - not Ferrari related except to a big supporter of my love of Ferrari:

My wife has been an incredible supporter to me in my interests, multiple car acquisitions, other toys etc etc and ETC!! Breast cancer survivor (though not her love of pink from that). Anyway, she has always said that (since the new Beetle convertible came out) she would love one of these if only they came in PINK. Well, she lived through my Mondial purchase and many others, so I figure it's her turn. They do not make pink bugs so I am considering buying an '04-05 with few miles and having it repainted pink.

Can those in the know give me some advice as to how best to go about this? What original color of paint would lend itself best to a PINK conversion? What level of dis-assembly, stripping, paint type, procedures etc should I specify and ask for? I want to do a nice job and it will be a keeper..not just a MAACO spray over - probably should strip trim, rubber, interior parts etc. How should I communicate and ask for this? Is a VW dealer body shop the best place to start - or a strong independent?

    Thanks for any thoughts.

    Chris

White is the best to start with for a pink conv. To do it right you would want to remove as many components as possible and paint the door jams.

For a proper color change the car basically needs to be dismantled (engine pulled and all) then striped and painted again. $$$$$ Work back from that to your desired level of expense/quality. Door jams are the minimum that needs to be done. As you don't plan on selling it anytime soon I won't go into the hit on resale you'll take with a color change.

Oh, also get as late a model bug as you can get. The early ones were known for have HUGE oil consumption problems! Just do a google search on the subject. I don't know if VW actually fixed the problem. Last I'd heard they were saying "Oh, 1qt every 1,000 miles is perfectly acceptable oil consumption." I have a 91 Toyota (MR2 Turbo) with over 150,000 miles on it and I don't burn any oil. Any modern car should be the same. Be sure to get full books and records on the car of your choice.
