paint wrap

The miracle of science... I bought this product that's a 2 part paint, and after it dries, you're supposed to be able to peal it off. I used it to experiment with wheel colors (see "gold wheels" thread) by just painting gold on top of the cured black paint. I was a bit nervous to see if it would peal off. I did cheat slightly by putting a quick coat of wax on the wheels before painting. Surprize.... it worked. Just Google "paint wrap". Mine's by Alsa.

According to the directions, it can be sprayed on if you have a big nozzle on your gun. I don't, so I put it on with a paint brush....quick and dirty. It was fine from a distance, but a little rough up close. I do like the gold wheel color, so I pulled an old Wagner Power Painter out of the attic to see if it can handle the viscosity of the paint, and lay down a smoother coat than the brush. I did find you could sand the stuff between coats to get rid of the drips etc. We'll see what happens. When you peal it off it's about the consistancy of a heavy duty garbage bag. If you ever wanted to see what your car looked like with the 512 BB black stripe around the bottom....this stuff would be perfect. It does come in various colors, but I had no problems painting it once it was dried. You could do a flame job on your car, then peal it off. Actually for something like that, get some smooth stick-on shelf paper. You can paint that and pull it on and off (if the paint doen't crack on removal)

 

The Alsa Co. calls it "paint wrap".... I think I saw an ad for it in a car mag. I bought some to black out the diagonal bars just inside the front fog lights. Once I started playing with it the possabilities are endless. After seeing the pictures people came up with for my gold wheel question, it was obvious to see what the stock wheels looked like in gold, I could "paint wrap" them, and then spray some rattle can gold on top of that, without screwing up the wheels.

P.S. I liked the gold, and the concept of not screwing up the wheels so this time I sprayed it on with a paint gun (instead of the crappy paint brush I used before). When it's dry tomorrow the gold and clear coat goes on. Hopefully it will all work and the wheel balance won't be messed up.
