My kid wants a paintball gun for his birthday, but he's only played once in his life. He may play again for his birthday party, but it won't be something he's going to do with any regularity. Given that, I'm reluctant to spend a great deal of money for a gun. I found a local store that has a WPG Trilogy set on sale for $85, and based on my 'net searching, it looks like that price is much less than 1/2 off of normal. I don't want to buy him a piece of junk, I've been down that road with his older brother, but I also don't want to buy top end gear.

    Suggestions/opinions/options would be appreciated.

Ask someone at the store. I doubt they will try and swindle you. Just give a call and ask.

The WPG is the bottom end for a cocker. Its not known to be a very good gun but $85 is a great price for it.

Personally I would get a Spyder.

Theres a lot more things that can go wrong with the WPG than the Spyder and it sucks to be sitting on the sidelines troubleshooting your gun instead of playing.

    Just my $.02

Does he play woodsball or speedball?

If he plays both, buy a Smart Parts Ion. Its not the best, but its not bad either. Its a good starter gun. Actually, both new and experienced players use this gun because its very cheap to maintain. It also has lots of upgrades so it can keep up with him and his skills as he play. If he play ONLY woodsball, get a Tippmann 98 Custom. Its a bit cheaper than the Ion and its easier to maintain! And it also has lots of upgrades as well.

Go paintballing with your son. Not only it is fun but you can create a better father and son relationship! My dad and I always go paintballing along with friends and as we spend more time together, its easier for me to open up.. vice versa. ;)

    Good luck.

    Best,
    Erik G.

He plays nothing at this point, and I honestly don't expect him to use the gun much. He's only 10, and just likes the fact that the gun can shoot and make a mess. I'm guessing it will see use mostly at campouts or out in the woods shooting at trees. You can see why I really don't want to put a lot of $$ into it.

    Thanks for the input.

I've shot a Trilogy before. They are decent guns and made by a reputable company. For $85 I can't see how you can go wrong. If he ends up really getting into paintball then you can eventually upgrade.

Spyder is the way to go for a first gun. It will never fail, they are cheap, and they are very easy to upgrade if your son ever wants to continue with it. Spyder is more or less the best you can get for a low price. I started with a Spyder and gradually worked my way up to the much much much more expensive guns, but always kept a Spyder in my bag for just having fun with. Look at Paintballgear.com for anything you could ever want. They are very helpful and incredibly knowledgable. If you give them a call they will be able to answer anything you ask without blowing smoke up your a**.

PS: I have no affiliation with the website, I have just never been so happy to give someone I have never seen before thousands of dollars...they were always very helpful when I called with questions.

PPS: If you ever buy him boxes of paint, never buy at any big name sports stores. Typically their paint is not fresh and shoots terribly. If he plays at a field, it is very worth it to buy cases online from a website such as the one listed above.

I'm seeing entry level Spyder Sonix kits online in the same price range, that might be a good way to go. I'm sure he won't care in the least, he just wants to shoot at something. I hope it's not the golfers going past the back yard! :)

buy a tippmann 98 custom or a cheap spyder for him, you can customize the tippmann to have a great look and also great and fast shooting.
I bought a tip 98 to start, and I still have it 7 years later as my backup marker in case my A-5 fails.

If he likes the sport, then you´ll have to upgrade anyway, if he just leaves it in his closet, then you won´t loose much money =)
