Hi guys, I currently have a yellow 458 spyder with the original forged sport rims. I saw some pictures with grigio ferro darker rims and was thinking of having the rims painted. My local Ferrari dealer said no problem they could repaint the wheels for me. My question is... will I have problems later on? I heard no matter how good the new paint job will be it won't be as good as the factory orig paint. Some chip and fade over time. Although dealer assured me they did repaint some wheels already and no complaints whatsoever. Anyone have experience on this? =) Much appreciated.

Given all the complaints about factory paint, the reputation of Ferrari paint in general, and the fact that there are quite a few excellent aftermarket companies out there, your stigma against non-factory paint is misplaced.

Most likely your wheels will be powdercoated, I would personally be more concerned about the potential decrease in wheel strength that the baking process can cause.

That said, wheel repair is VERY advanced these days, even the factory wheels get chips, and a decent shop can make them better than new again.

I've got the darker rims from the factory and after 2 years there are plenty of stone chips in the rear ones. It's easily fixed and I'll do it one day.

    I'd go right ahead.

aftermarket painting of rims is easy.
chipping is not a problem, but curb rash is.
my rims are NOT powder coated, simply painted.
after hitting a curb, it is simple to repair and repaint the rim, costs around $150.00.
the advantage of doing this aftermarket: you will get a perfect paint match when the repairs are done.
it can be difficult to match the color of painted oem rims.

I have a yellow 458 with painted grigio rims. They have held up very well, given that wheels are subjected to constant bombardment -- only a couple of hits so small I can feel them but not see them.

IMO the yellow car looks much better with dark gray rims, but once you do this you may notice that the rest of the car does not look right with chrome or bright metal touches. So I powdercoated satin black Ferrari logos and exhaust tips. The car now looks much more sporty. Here it is modeling HRE wheels (the originals are back on now).

repainting is fine and you can get it done at a higher quality then Ferrari can do. Just gotta shop around. I would rather buy an aftermarket rim in the color I want, that way you can keep the stock rims just encase you want to sell down the line. It will have its original look.

Hmmm... Not me but rather than the rims, it might have been better to have blue on the running boards below the doors...

Easy to remove though I did not do it. Also not expensive. Talk to Travis at SD Motorsports (San Diego) 858 202 0200 or 619 709 8468 (cell).

Wonder what this would look like with a Rosso Corsa car, with Rosso Corsa color on the wheel instead of blue and red center caps with black cavallinos?

    Anybody good enough with photoshop?

Yes, in satin so that it has some contrast but is very subtle.

This is controversial. I just prefer the unbroken wide mouth of the 458 without the interruption of the chrome logo. Here it is in a photo where the logo is invisible. The other car is my wife's F430. Then the rear view which is pretty straightforward.

Today had some free time and tried to simulate a yellow effect on my black rims - it’s just some yellow paper so the colour is not a perfect match but what do you think? Would you do it ?
