I just bought a very nice golf cart. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120361825919&sspagename=ADME%3AB%3ASS%3AUS%3A1123&viewitem= It is in overall good/excellent condition. The hub caps were originally chrome and some/most of the cheap chrome finish has worn off. I want to spray can them a somewhat satin silver. A spay chrome generally does not seem to look good. I think a satin/semi gloss silver may look OK. My problem is the guy that sold it to me sprayed the tires with a silicone product like amoral. What can I do to clean these hub caps so they do not show a million fish eyes? If I am successful in painting them and they do not fish eye and they do not look that great I'll buy some new ones. But I want to try painting these first. I was thinking I would put them in my dishwasher first then try the 3M wax/silicone removal solvent on them. Not easy to do. Maybe in a pan with a brush? Then maybe back in the dishwasher. Then try painting them.

Lacquer thinner pretty much eats off everything. Then Dawn dish liquid cuts grease really well w/ hot water. They used Dawn on the birds & seals after the Exxon Valdez disaster. Then I would go w/ alcohol before you paint.

To avoid fish eyes, you have to avoid water, oil and silicone. You are going to have to clean them up pretty well (using what venusome said, works pretty well), let them dry, and then paint them.

Do what I did Vs going the can route:

When I painted the engine bay of my old 308 (engine was out), a local body shop sold me a small glass canister that was powered by a screw-on air cartridge. They mixed up a small (half quart I believe it was) can of the color I needed that gets mixed with a hardener and some sort of laquer. I poured them all together and sprayed away! From this inexpensive little air powered gun canister, the job came out extremely well! You may check that out if you have a good auto body store near you.

Check out harbor freight for a spray gun and an inline dryer if you have a compressor. Then go into a paint and body store and have them mix you up some single stage paint. If you don't have a compressor, they can put the paint you would like in a spray bottle. Preparation of the surface is key.
