After a trip to Tuscany my July '00 F550 Maranello (Nero Daytona, metallic black) was extremely dirty, covered in dry muddy water stains from light summer rain. The car was driven in extremely hot conditions before it could be washed. When I finally washed & polished it, I found that the stains from the silt contained in the raindrops have set on the paintwork, and won't come off with a standard non-abrasive polish!!!

So, now I am faced with the prospect of a professional T-cut machine polish job, something I usually try to avoid because invariably it leaves unsightly "halos" which take months of gentle wax-polishing to smoothen away.

I am also very disappointed with the quality of Ferrari paint! OK, the black bodywork got extremely hot in the sunshine and the silt chemically reacted with the paint, but still I'd expect better resistance on such an expensive car.

Has anyone experienced such a problem, or has anyone got any suggestions on how to fix it without resorting to a professional machine-polish?

If you can get it there, try Maquire's Paint Cleaner (not wax-cleaner). A detailer put me onto it years ago, and it works great. If you use rubbing compound you make a mess, even polishing compound is way too abrasive, but this Paint Cleaner will take fine stuff off just great. It removes the was too, so you will have to wax after using it.
