Panamera Turbo & Cayenne Turbo Recalled, Stop-Sale Order Issued

WASHINGTON — Porsche is recalling 270 2011-'12 Porsche Panamera Turbo, 2012 Panamera Turbo S and 2012 Porsche Cayenne Turbo vehicles because of a fire risk, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

"The turbine wheel of a turbocharger may fracture due to a casting defect," said NHTSA in its recalls summary of the problem. "If a fracture occurs, vehicle performance will be decreased and the turbine shaft may fracture. If the shaft fractures, oil may be drawn into the exhaust system, resulting in smoke and the increased risk of a fire."

In June, Porsche decided to stop the production of any additional Panamea Turbo S vehicles and any Panamera Turbo or Cayenne Turbo vehicles equipped with an optional turbo kit, it told federal safety regulators.

The affected Porsche models have two turbochargers with turbine wheels manufactured from a titanium-aluminum alloy. The special alloy turbine wheels were produced by an outside supplier on a small series production line, said Porsche.

Porsche told federal safety regulators that there have been 37 reported failures of the titanium-aluminum alloy turbine wheels worldwide, three of which were in the U.S. On June 26, 2012, the first case of a turbine wheel defect resulting in a fire was reported in the U.S.

Porsche said it is not aware of any accidents or injuries resulting from the failure of a titanium-aluminum alloy turbine wheel.

Porsche dealers will replace the turbine wheels. The recall is expected to begin sometime this month. Owners can contact Porsche at 1-800-767-7243.
