    Hello John; I'm currently building up a 351C 4V 4bolt main engine for my 1972 Pantera. Went for a lightened reciprocating assembly. Using a knife-edged & lightened crankshaft, H beam rods & aluminum forged pistons, aluminum flywheel & pullies. Running a ported & polished 4V small chamber heads with both titanium intake & exhaust valves, titanium retainers. Altered oiling system with bushed lifters, restrictor oil passages, restricted passage push rods, oil return lines from the front & back of both cylinder heads draining back into the large capacity oil pan with windage tray, baffles & trap door. Running a hydraulic roller cam & lifters, & roller rocker arms with stud girdles. Intake is a Blue Thunder with a 750 double pumper holley. Exhaust is the famous "Bundle of Snakes" 180 headers ceramic coated.

    Can you please share the build-up specs of your 427. Did you have to utilize an adapter plate to bolt the 427 to the ZF trans. Do you have a projected horsepower goal?

    I'm ALWAYS on the look out for an All Aluminum Fontana block, would like to mate the Fontana to a pair of Aluminum AFD heads. I was SERIOUSLY considering acquiring a set of titanium Corvette LS7 connecting rods & machining them to fit a 351 C crankshaft journal. Titanium is ADDICTIVE!!!!!....you place a stainless valve in the palm of your hand & then replace it with a titanium valve, & it seems that the "T" valve Floooooooooooats!!!!....send me a PM, as I know a few good Pantera websites......Mark

    Excuse me if I mentioned this already. I think I saw the 7X which was a Ford show car in person--it was iridescent lime green at the time. It had a flying buttress roof like a Maserati Merak and a more blunt nose that would have allowed it to meet the '75 and later bumper laws. I heard it a rumor it had a 400 cu. in. V8 but maybe that is what they were planning. Later I thought I saw it at an RM auction. By that time it was two tone, cream white on top, bronze on the bottom half similar to Boxer paint scheme. I was wondering it it was titled as a 1975 Pantera because that would mean it was the only U.S. legal 1975 Pantera. But that's not important now as I read that it's back in Italy, painted one color and owned by a friend of Pantera designer Tom Tjaarda. I thought it was a great buy when at the RM because it was a factory authorized concept car for under $200K.

    I once had a list of sixteen serial numbers for Gruppe 4 GT/4s built by the factory back in the early '70s. After I got the list I was told later than eight were real race cars and eight were just street cars that had the same wide wheels, wide fenders, etc. but weren't really prepared for racing, more like a "cafe racer" motorcycle that looks like a racing bike but is just for posing outside cafes. Did anyone else hear this rumor?

    I gather the cars were only nominally successful because Ford Mo Co had already soured on DeTomaso and didn't want to budget for them racing, or maybe since that was the early 70s the smog and safety laws were hitting Detroit so hard they were cancelling racing budgets so engineers could work on safety bumpers, air bags, emissions devices. I heard the 351-C engines even when built by Bud Moore blew up left and right. I regret not contacting Moore when he was still alive to find out why that was. The engine seems plenty robust when modified by American Pantera owners. Anyway going back to the 16 race cars, I was wondering if there's been a real effort by anyone to check out the 16 cars so that when they are found they can be properly valued as the competition Cobras are when fully documented vs. those modified later.

    By the way I have seen people try to fake a GT/4 and the ironic thing is that you have to be careful with adding the rear flares, centering them over the center of the wheel--as there is some discrepency over where the high point of the non flared fender is over the center of the wheel so you can end up with the flares in the wrong place. Of course the real way to do this is add the flares after the proper racing Campys and tires you plan to run are in place with the racing springs, shocks, etc.

    A quick look on Wikipedia shows he's still alive. So maybe you still have that opportunity to find out why his motors failed.

    Speed channel had a great bio-profile on Bud a few years ago. He's a true WW2 hero!!

    I just found this thread Hummm! I've been a Pantera guy way before I was a Ferrari guy. I actually bought my first Ferrari shopping for a Pantera. Had my first ride at age of 14 and got hooked. Lots of potential in these cars. Unfortunately lots of rust too, and sometimes really bad. I little bit roughly built in my opinion. But lots of fun to have with them.     What would be required to save a car like this? Total restoration and engine rebuild? How about the notoriously rust prone frame? A relatively new DD would just be crushed, but can you save a classic car after flooding?
