Actually, I believe the correct number is 40 made, 2 crash tested, and 1 in the DeTomaso showroom floor, leaving 37 for public consumption.

The Pantera Si is THE car DeTomaso should model for a new Pantera, and of course be USDOT certified this time. It only needs to be updated slightly on the exterior (though I believe the interior needs to be totally redone). That stupid egg prototype they've had for quite a while now is hideous. To me a Pantera should always look like a Pantera. Kinda like a Porsche 911, no matter what year, you know it's a 911.

Well I think modern Ferraris sound pretty wimpy unless they are hitting 6000 RPMs, then the scream is awesome. But at idle and cruising, they don't sound all that great, that's why everyone runs out and puts Tubis on their new Ferraris

As a fellow Pantera owner, I couldn't agree more Steve. I'd like to have a Ferrari some day, but not at the cost of giving up the Pantera. It's just too much fun, and if you want a better suspension, beefed up motor, whatever, it's not going to hurt the value of the car, only increase it. Nothing like a group of Panteras cruising together, not only is it quite an audible experience, but visually they are not only great looking, but often each unique per the owner's taste.

How so? True, European buyers were given actual options, but I wouldn't say the cars were "better".

A guy in my neighborhood has a stunning red Pantera. It sounds incredible! There is a hill near my parents house but a good 200 ft away with trees between their house and the road, but you can hear his awesome car everytime he goes by like it's just outside the window. Especually up the hill under acceleration! Gives me goosebumps just thinking about it. Great car. :)

The options extended to everything including the power output of the engine, and the GT5S was a well built car, and in stock form handled like it always should have, the only way a US buyer could get one was through Amerisport, or through a specialist or personal import, and the Nuevo model cannot be federalized. I do know though that some of the best cars are in the US because so many have invested time and effort in improving them, one of my friends is a well known Pantera specialist in Mass. It is sad that they were never officially sold there after the mid 70s

The engines compression was just lowered, most US owners changed that pretty quick.

There was another guy that imported them as well. I believe it was called Pantera America.

Yes, this is the worst thing DeTomaso did, not getting their cars later USDOT certified (including the current Guara). 75% of the Panteras sold are in the US. It only makes sense to tap your fanbase as potential new buyers.

If DeTomaso ever really comes back they MUST sell in the US, it's the only way they are ever going to sell any cars.

BTW, I've heard the US Panteras were actually stiffer than the EU ones. I at least know support bars have been found in early US Panteras, not later found on US GT5-S's (ask Kirk Evans).

Is that your car on your profile, its quite something, the early models are so pretty, also altho i am not a member of fchat for long i always got the feeling that Panteras were not well thought of on this forum, its nice to see such a long thread about the car

Yes, that is my car in the profile (an image I made up for some club t-shirts--I still got some!). I even like the L models that many people don't. I think the black bumpers give the nose a more pointed stance. I'd get rid of mine for a GT5-S like yours in a minute, love those.

As a former owner, Pantera's are great cars, it's just that most of them have been butchered up by hot rodders. That's one reason I switched to Ferrari's too expensive to butcher them, but I'm sure the desire is there to "make them better" (HA)

The car initially pictured is an 89 GT5S, one of 37, previously had an 87 GT5S Blue over Cashmere int, 17k mi, which was one of 27 for import through Amerispec. I beleive Willhoit was importing also, not sure though. It was one dealer in the midwest, can't put a finger on it though... If anyone is interested I have a 72 Pantera for sale, only 45 mi, the NICEST Pantera in the country, subtle customization by renowned Pantera Guru, Best of the Best Hands Down! Car is being offered prior to going on Ebay w/reserve of $60k for $55k. No Negotiating! Car needs nothing but new home. Thanks all.

A 34 year old car with only 45 miles ! Such a car is worth less than one with 45k miles IMHO. That garage queen will cost some kid of money to sort out once someone decided to drive it. Everything such as seals and gaskets will need replaced. Stay away...stay very far away...!

I disagree completely, at least nothing is worn out. I'd love to find a car like that It would be worth replacing all the rubber ,gaskets, seals etc. Big Deal.
However I wouldn't pay the price the owner thinks it's worth just because of that.

Lom mileage isnt necessarily a sign on non use, there are many Panteras with similair mileage readings and they are in better condition than when they were built

Here are some pic's of the pantera.

The car has been fanatically maintained, on a trickle charger, maintenance done every year, car is driven at least twice a year, in climate controlled collection of 60 other pristine auto's. If you need more info, please e-mail me offline.

So how could the car be "used" without being driven ? Idling the engine in the garage isn't "use" IMHO.
