The ratchet hold and release on my parking brake is getting a bit sketchy, not always reliably releasing or engaging. I am willing to bet Ferrari fished one out of he parts bin of off the shelf suppliers, does anyone know what ordinary every day car might share the mechanism?

The ratchet mechanism is crap, I have replaced many. The teeth are butter soft and just wear out. Is or was available as a stand alone part but not really in the books as such, I still have one on the shelf. Try PN 66956100 with your local dealer and see if he can get it. I got a bunch under that number a few years ago. Fits quite a few models.

I don't know about sharing any parts but a C4 corvette uses the same style parking brake in the same location.

Did the c4 operate the same, ie pull up then push back down, pull up again to release.

I am going to cross reference that, good spot! I haven't had a chance to pull it apart yet but looking at those pics and how those mechanisms are usually made I bet I could water jet out the ratchet and pawl with very little trouble as well, then if anyone else needs one it is available.

In my video I make mention to the ratchet, after I took a good look at it - nothing wrong.

I had adjusted mine such that the shoes started to grab right away. If you allow a bit more cable slack you get more clicks of the ratchet since the handle stokes more to take up the initial slack.

My ratchet mechanism was loaded with grease, which had picked up lint. This prevented the teeth from seating properly, and the brake would sometimes release unexpectedly. I took it all apart, de-greased it, and put it back together with a little machine oil. Haven't had any problems since.

    LOL...

So does the Lotus Esprit's fly-off handbrake, but the mechanism looks quite different.

Perhaps prior to installation, the mechanism's teeth can be heat treated to make them tougher (?)

Brian, have you installed this part number in a 355? I am assuming that is what you mean by fits quite a few models? Thanks.

It fits 348,355, 456,550,575 and Enzo. It was never offered for sale here. It was a recall part. Only complete handles were offered here. My supplier was offered 100% of someones inventory. I found out about it and bought them all. I think I have used all but one and I do not think they are available anywhere. If I do have one it will be saved for one of my clients, sorry. The number is in Maranello Classics system but says "Enquire".

Brian, thank you for this information. I was able to order one from eurospares (order confirmed but not in my hand yet). I have noticed mine not holding unless I make a few attempts and then the ratchet will hold, but needless to say I don't trust it and would like to have this part on hand before I tear into it. What model had the recall on it? Was it the 550/575? Anyway, thanks again.

I see that part at Eurospares is showing "new to order" rather than "New-In Stock". Looks like you got the last one. I wonder if they are remanufacturing them. They used to be NLA.

Their source pretty much has to be Maranello Classics and they say POA. With them it means NLA unless they have enough requests to get more made.

Sometimes if you take it out you can repair teeth and make it work again. They were not well made with high quality metal.

When I ordered it the site showed a quantity of two. I have a tracking number from fedx so we will see.

I took delivery of the part this week and will replace it soon. It just doesn't make sense to me to take any chances on a safety item like a parking brake.
