    Sorry.

In my search for a 458, I have found many with F/R Parking Sensors but few with Backup Cameras. I am not a fan of sensors but think a camera would be an asset.

Is there a reason why the cameras are so rare?

Haha...the description of the thread is too funny. I thought someone was serious trying to make a case for the 67hp increase.

It's my opinion that both the sensors and the camera are necessary unless you have a huge garage/warehouse. The sensors are necessary to tell you when you're getting close and the rear camera is great for double-checking. find a car with both. But , I think you might be able to add it on at the dealer if not.

MY build out sheet says the rear parking camera cost $3,600 or so. So, yea, that's expensive. But, a dent or paint scratch is more expensive to fix. Why risk it. Get the camera to start or add it on later. Call your local dealer to find out how much to add on afterwards.

Cameras get dirty and can become pretty useless. Wet is not good. Sensors seem to work whether dirty or not. They are a must for me.

I don't know why so many people pass on the camera option, as I find it a must. You just can't see well enough when backing up without it. Must be the cost of the option, although one bad experience saved more than pays for it.

As for retrofitting the OEM unit, the camera is housed in the little dimple shown here above the license plate. I'm not sure if the bumper is drilled to fit or if there is another bumper part number with the dimple pre-installed.

Agreed...I find the parking sensors pretty much useless without the camera for you do not know how far you truly are from what you're backing up into something. In some cars is own the sensor is that full alert us when you are 24 inches away and some other cars it's goes into full alert when you are only 8 inches away. I specked the rearview cameras on all my Ferrari's as of late and they are amazing in giving me the confidence to back up into tighter spots when parking in the city in the first and smooth attempt. Get the camera ;)

I believe many people pass you can't to the fact that you can't order the camera independently from the sensors and a lot of people don't like the look of the sensors.

I find it hard to believe anyone would elect not to buy a camera for $3,600 when spending $300,000 on a car. Many have voiced distaste for the little "button" sensors, so are probably not excited about the additional "lense". I have owned a 458 since Feb 2012 with a camera, and have found it very useful. I'll pay $323,000 for a car but I refuse to pay $326,000. </SARCASM>

I love the camera on my 458 so much that I had them added to my Jeep (the spare tire blocks rear window view).

    I had both

To be honest the sensors were more useful than the camera. For $3500, I would pass.

The rear sensors on my 458 do not detect low curbs, so it is possible to damage the rear diffuser by backing into a curb even though the sensors are silent (fortunately, I've avoided doing so). I've ordered the camera and sensors for my 488.

But the camera is really weak at posts on the rear corners.

When backing up to a low concrete parking stop the camera is your best friend as the sensors will not always pick those up and that's how you will damage your diffuser.

    I have both on mine

Out of the 5 458s I looked at only one had a camera. The picture quality was ok. Afaik it was only a rear camera from what i gather doing my test drive. My 458 doesn't have it but it does have the sensors. Camera would have been better but sensors are better than nothing imo. Does anyone know if the 488 or f12 or Cali t have front and rear?

488 has optional front and rear cameras.

Some people on here have commented about quality of the picture. Huh? If we want quality, put a Go Pro on the back and watch it from your phone. The camera on the car is meant to tell you "Object" or "No Object"...that's pretty much it.

As far as sensors...never rely just on sensors alone. My BMW X5 has sensors...very good one...but, sometimes they for whatever reason do not pick something up. That's what the camera is for. It has saved me from hitting something many times when the sensors failed. they work 98% of the time just fine. it's the 2% of the time that will have you wanting them.

Just buy both and don't look back.

    Cameras are required starting 2018.

So chevys and fords will all have them...relegating your camraless Fcar akin to a modern day Model T.

Thanks to all for the input. I convinced both is best. Has anyone had a camera dealer retrofitted, if so how much is the toll?

Next to installing you have to find a rear bumper (second hand) and have it resprayed ...

Then the cam + wiring loom and special camera unit ... (Ferrari 458, California, 612 Scaglietti Control Station Parking Camera 234996)

So, me too, I am intersted who may have installed it ? And can show us how it was done with photo's ...

    Please chime in :)

Mine has sensors plus F/R cameras so guess I'm still ahead of the Model T. But no e-motor or turbo or 10.2" HD touch screen - should I be concerned?

At least you won't hit anything backing up, or going forwards!
