My friend and I are coming to Chicago in his car this Sunday to go car-hunting, and we were wondering where the best, cheapest place to park downtown is. Is it easy to find a place, should we just drive around? Any suggestions? This is probably a really ignorant question but thanks anyway

Looking for a car in downtown Chicago? Can you be a little more specific? Tons of parking garages all about the same price - EXPENSIVE. Just drive around the area where you are and you'll find parking nearby.

Yeah, there are garages everywhere, although they are expensive. Park the car and plan on moving around by foot or public transportation. The weather is supposed to be nice this weekend.

By "car-hunting" I meant looking for nice cars to take pictures of, not looking to buy. But if it's so expensive we should probably take the train.

I've never had good luck at this in Chicago - at least compared to other cities. Unless you just go to the Luxury Motors showroom. It seems like very little is ever parked somewhere visible and I don't see all that much being driven around. Some of the suburbs might be better and then you can just drive around.

It's going to be nice out this weekend. Go to the V-Triangle and sit outside somewhere. You'll see plenty of cars and talent go by. My MIL took the Amtrak in and it cost her $35 round trip. That's hard to beat.

Where's the V-Triangle? Is that around Rush street?
My friend can't come so I will be taking the train, which is only $20 round trip, so no more worries about parking. First stop is BGC, then up on Rush to Hugo's Frog Bar since somebody recommended that earlier. I'll also just walk up and down Michigan ave. And finally if I have time, down to the Sears towerish parking garage where I found the DB9 last time. I can't wait!
Is Lake Shore dr. a good place to see cars too? Seems like it would be since it's a pretty famous road

    Where Rush & State meet.

    Gibson's is right there.

Michigan Ave. would be better than LSD. On LSD the cars will be whizzing by, plus Michigan Ave. will provide better viewing of creatures of another ilk! :)

BEST / CHEAPEST place to park...

Its right by the House of Blues.

Parking Garage, in after 3pm.. out by 5am... only $6. Everyday of the week.

Impossible to find Cheaper RIGHT downtown.

The tall condo/hotel on the South-East corner KINZIE and LASALLE (enterance is on the South side of KINZIE, half a block east of LASALLE).

Clean, very well lit, never too packed. Fastest Elevators I've ever used!

This is at your own risk, but I've parked at both of these places many times without a problem. Depends how long you are gone for probably, but I'm usually away for an hour. I found that parking next to Neiman Marcus with your flashers on (it's a 15 minute loading zone) will get you parking right off of Michigan Ave. Also there is a street called Cedar where I've parked at on numerous occasions without any problems. It is in the Gold Coast section two blocks north of Oak St. (where Ferraris on Oak is held) off of where Rush and State intersect. Lastly, there's construction going on at the corner of Walton St. and State St. where they have meters as well as a driveway or two blocked off without meters that you could park at from what I've been told. Again, these parking spots are free but at your own risk. It's possible you could get a $50 parking fine.

BTW, if you have not been go to Tavern on Rush which is right near where State and Rush intersect. You can get a table outside and lunch is not expensive at all. Generally great people and car viewing.
