Looking for some advice on how to solve my electrical issue. Problem: 328 '89 Parking and dash lights staying on after: 50 Headlight stalk [Retractable headlights and outside lights control knob] is turned off (counterclockwise rotation on lever and lever lifted to up/off position) 55 Parking lights Switch is off 69 Front Fog Lights Switch is off Where would the problem most likely be? In the headlight stalk? At parking switch in the center console? Or at the fuse box. A relay or? I'm just looking for a direction before I start dissembling at the wrong place. That's an interesting one. I'm assuming that you must disconnect the battery, or does the 328 have a master switch? What happens when you reconnect?
Try removing the relay with the "K" on the outer case (...006) - relay O. If the lights go out, as you put the relay back in see if you can feel if the relay is clicking "on" (= most likely a problem in the stalk knob switch) or if the relay is "off" but stuck in the closed position (= bad relay).
The 328 comes with a quick disconnect that is accessible when you pop the hood. No change powering on and off. Thanks Steve. An inspection of Relay O showed an incorrect relay plugged into that location I had a new 332 015 006 in my spare kit and replaced it with that (someone had put a 332 014 113 in that slot). I've owned the car about 8 months and have been running that way... Results 56 Parking light indicator is now lit on the instrument panel all other instrument lights (dash and console) are now off Side marker lights are off Now only front single light is lit in front Back tail lights are lit. So I guess like it is acting like a "on" parking switch now (except I can't turn it off) Note: Turning the parking switch on and off repeatedly doesn't cause the lights to change at all. Do you recommend attacking the stalk or concentrating on the parking switch in the console? From your previous post I am guessing the stalk? Sounds more like parking light switch to me (having a ...113 in that location, rather that a ...006, isn't a disaster, but would cause the dash lights and more of the external lights to illuminate when the parking light switch was turned "on" -- which is part of what you had, but doesn't explain things being "on" when they shouldn't be). The dash lights now being "off" (with everything switched "off") is a good sign for the stalk knob switch being OK. Let me have a peek at your schematic to see if your (new) symptom can be investigated/diagnosed easily...
Just unplug the parking light switch to see if the parking light indicator (and those other external lights) goes out. Even though the parking light switch rocker may still have correct physical tactile feedback, like it is switching on-off, it could be electrically bad inside; or something in the central tunnel might be shorting two connections together - and just pulling the switch up should let you inspect that -- Good Hunting!
If you move the dip switch lever to the low beam or high beam position and the headlights come on, then the problem is related to the light switch in the lever or the relay. If not, then the problem is related to the console switch/relay. Brian B. Patrick Ottis Co.
Well it turned out being a defective center console parking light switch. After removing the tunnel (not too difficult, just time consuming the first time since I didn't want to break anything) I managed to unplug the parking switch and that turned off the parking lights. So it looks like a defective switch. Now I get to have fun disassembling the switch and repairing it. Thanks again for the help.
