I have my PPL, had it since 2004. I picked up one of these Phantom 4 drones to work with my commercial RE business. I needed a biennial flight review, but I'm going to take this Pt 107 test next week, I think, first in order to get familiar with sectionals and weather once again. Then go for my ASEL flight review and 3rd class medical.

Been leafing through the drone FAA study guide, seems like everything is the same except for some of the regs on night flying, alt ceilings, speed limits for these things and whatnot.

Anyone gone through the test? Looks like it won't be too bad if you already fly/flown manned A/C. Do I even need my flight calculator?

I find the fact that these drones have a self lockout function within class B and restricted areas pretty slick. Do they all do that?

Unless things have changed recently, it's easier than you think. Being a licensed pilot, all you need to do it take a free online course at faasafety, gov. There's a test at the end of the course. It's easy. No sviation questions, as you're already a pilot. You can retake it as many times as you need to pass. The whole thing will take you 30 mins. Print out your course certificate it provides and take it to the FAA for a Remote PIC license. The FAA may charge you. You can also take it to a CFI and I believe they can input it into FAA website. You won't get a temporary certificate though and will have to wait a few months for the plastic one.

If you need a temporary one to fly immediately, go to the FAA

I hope this helps. It's another license any pilot can get without a hassle.

Also read the new regs on medical. You may not need to renew your Class III if it has not yet expired.

Nah, I'm in need of a FR and Med. They expired a few years ago. I am EXTREMELY rusty reading sectionals I'm finding, particularly with regard to AGL vs MSL. I really get those confused. I moved recently, so my Jeppesen text books are in storage somewhere.

The rules for Pt 107 for certificated pilots is I need to have a current review or else I have to take the 60 question written/computer exam down at the testing center for $150. Lots cheaper to take the exam than get a new FR and medical.

I'm flying it over commercial property so I just want to be legal when doing so. I'm not saying anything about last weekend, though...

Passed the written test today with a 97%. I felt this exam was pretty brutal, considering it is for a drone. Lots of sectional questions, lots of carefully worded questions. I'd say it was about 80% as difficult as the PPL written. I feel for anyone who hasn't been through flight training of some kind.
