My '79 308GT4 is missing the little "plate" in the enginebay that goes over top of the clutch housing....have no *clue* what I'm talking about? Not surprised - that was maybe the worst description I've evar given.

When looking at the engine, it's right below the oil filter and oil pressure sending unit....shaped like a trapezoid....held down by 2 nuts.

    I've got nada...any ideas?

    Thanks so much!

And yes, you DO want to get that and the gasket ASAP and install them. That is the inspection cover for the flywheel, needed when you need to view the flywheel to set the car at TDC for cam belt changes, or when you want to check your timing with a timing light. As you noticed, the oil filter is right above it. If you change your oil and get oil down that hole when you remove the oil filter, you may get oil on your clutch disk/flywheel and that is a mess. Your clutch will slip and smoke and will never be the same!

P.S. Dennis McCann is the man. If he has it, you will get a good price and fast, courteous service. I like those guys.

Birdman is of course 100% right. Get the plate and the gasket because if your filter ever drips oil...

That's the flywheel inspection hole?! Good Lord it looks so much easier to set these motors at TDC!

I called Dennis McCann's place today - they're out of the stock on the plate, but do have the gasket. Norma said she can get a plate from their distributor in Europe, but won't be able to get ahold of him until Monday. At any rate, I said, "I'll take it." So whenever she can get one, it will be coming my way.

Thank you all VERY much for the help - it is tremendous.

    Final question...

I got my plate from Daniel @ Ricambi along with a gasket. Naturally, if I was missing the plate and gasket, I was also missing the two fasteners that hold it down. I'm not concerned with having them be OEM - I just need to know the correct size.

I *could* just buy two (each) of every nut at the hardware store and just keep trying until I find the one that fits, but there has to be a better way. Does anybody know this info off-hand, by chance? The thread size is the limiting factor, I suppose...

Anyway, thanks in advance to anyone who can help me out here!

I'm 95% sure that the thread size will either be M6 x 1.0P (more likely) or M5 x 0.8P (less likely).

I'll check on those sizes today - I'm heading to the hardware store for another project anyway.... Thank you!

when i looked up the parts book it didn't list the size however it does list it as a double threaded stud with a washer and nut assy. if you use a bolt make sure it's short enough to hold the plate and fit in the hole. too long and ofcourse it wont work.

M6x1.0 sounds about right, i'll go check mine and let you know. i have a thread gauge for it.

your gona love this, it's not M6 but likely M5x.8. my gauge doesnt read below M6. there is also M4, M4.5 too so i'm not 100% sure. if M5 is used elsewhere than it's going to be M5 as the smaller M4~4.5 is odd.

if you can find it at your local store great. but otherwise mcmaster carr has it. i'm missing the plate also but my studs are still there. M5 is small so be carefull about torque. 5lbs max maybe less depending on material.

Your local hardware store has metric nuts for pennies. Buy a whole selection...you will use them!! I would put nylocks on there just so they stay put.

Every time I go to the hardware store I stock up on a few sizes of metric fasteners that are getting low in my stash and I have little jars full of washers, nuts, bolts, etc. so when i come across a really nasty looking nut or a missing washer, I have replacements.

    ...and the winner IS:

    M5 x .8!

Thanks to all those who contributed... On top of having the correct nuts, I also have learned my way around my local hardware store's metric section!

    Many thanks...
