I have a 1979 USA version 308 GTS with carbs and 2 dizzys. The subject part is in the evaporative emissions system, and costs around $350. It is missing on my car. What has anyone else done - buy the part, do without, some clever substitution?

It's not a super-critical part (but I always like seeing it being present on a '78-'79 US 308). It's the small blower motor that evacuates the fuel vapors in the airbox over to the charcoal canister at engine shutoff (there's a timer ECU in the passenger footwell that runs it for a few minutes after engine shut-off). If you just connect the tube under the airbox directly over to the charcoal canister, it would be no worse emission-wise than a '77 US 308. You might be able to find a good used one as many '78-'79 US 308 get most of their emission equipment removed (and usually done badly ;)).

The car runs perfectly without it. The benefit of it working is it really reduces the gas smell in the garage when you park your hot 308 in there.

Thank you. I think I'll hold out for a used one, as it doesn't seem to be a necessary pert.
