I originally bought a 77 308 almost two years ago, and have since been collecting various odd bits and working to overhaul the engine/gearbox, and put it back on the road. But events have recently changed my course dramatically.

Several weeks ago, I added another 77 308 GTB to the garage/stable, and am rather over my head now in both cars and parts as well as finances. One has to go! But the question is, how does it go?

My intent is to take any parts off the worse of the two, which is the first car, and replace anything on the second car that is in worse condition, thereby making the best of the best out of the number two car. But what about number one? I was contemplating re-installing all the suspension, setting it back down on all fours, and try to sell it off as a rolling chassis less engine and gearbox. My wife hates the idea, as the car currently has a heritage certificate showing the engine and gearbox correct to the car as of date of manufacture, but I don't know if thats worth much to very many people.

My second option then would be to sell it with everything extra I dont need, thereby creating a project car, but looking at prices on ebay, etc., I doubt I would get much more throwing in the engine and gearbox, it would seem I am giving them away. My third option would be to part it out, cut it up, and scatter its bones to the four winds in which many of you would come like vampires and pick it to peices, which would take one more 308 out of existence. While I would hate making it go away, I am not going to give it away just to fulfill some ritual of keeping the ghost alive. I guess what I am asking for is some dialouge that makes sense that could put the maximum $$$$ I have invested back in my pocket and keep the car around. I am thinking the rolling chassis without a driveline would be the best option. Thoughts?

I should add, that I also own a older 380 MB roadster, and I could sell it and keep both 308 cars, but the wife really likes the 380, and thinks one F car for now is good, as she will never drive one. So the point is moot, I just thought I would throw it out there.

I'll say two complete cars is a lot to keep up with!

    Congrats on the new one...

    Colors? VINs?

That would drive my decision, parts is parts. I also give weight to her opinion though on the matching numbers part....a hard choice, keep the one that is closer to running down the road!

Sell the rest as a project, instead of breaking it up....probably not the best financial answer.....

I have a heritage certificate for the second car as well. Its also cleaner up underneath. First car is #21181, currently red. Originally left Italy montecarlo blu. Black interior. Second car is #21645, always a red car, rosso chiaro, black interior with tan seats. I swapped seats as my black ones are better shape, but I want tan seats now. It looks like someone set something hot on the tan passenger seat, as other than that they are in good shape. I don't have good history on either car, so that is not any factor, although 21645 only reads 44K miles and looks more like it, and came with airpump and all the emission junk and wrapped headers, so probably the motor has never been out. Its a time bomb for now until I get it all serviced, few more weeks.

What cystal ball do you have on pricing? My family is trying to pry mine out of my hands! LOL!

I keep saying....."early....non-cat...carbed....paid for!"....irrational one word statements like that......

I do share your hunch, but just a gut feeling....."they won't make anymore" type thing....the Auctions show no love, everyone wants a Hemi 'Cuda!

These cars are with him in Minnesota, I assume. See profile......he's worked on the first one a long time, it saps energy from other things after awhile.......No, not THOSE things! , OTHER things, like the ski boat!

Plus a 308GTB is just so pretty sitting in the garden with a fountain and a horsie sculpture, running or not!

okay the clear non emotianal answer.
part out the first one to re-coup the most $$$. it seems that you bought #2 becouse #1 was just to far gone in condition to really warrent the cost of putting it back on the road. #2 sounds to be the better car and at that i'd cut my losses on #1 and part her out, don't think of it as loosing another 308 but saving the lives of a few others :)

i think lyle is putting together a msg board for parts, so owners can post what they are selling.

oh and save what bits you'll need for car 2 so you don't have to spend even more. remove the emotion and look at it as clients project, he has two planes and only needs one. not to get on you at all paul but i hate to see people burn money for no reason. you have the rare chance of accutually having a parts car to pull from and you can sell off whats left to make back some lost $$$

See if you can sell the worse project to someone that will get it back on the road.....It would be sad to have one less Ferrari in the world. You can get some money out of those rolling projects.

And you would be amazed how inexpensive it was to make it look that way. Floor is just Armstrong floor tiles. I dont think the floor cost $400 with glue and all, and has held up great. Rest is just paint. I used a oil base floor paint on the walls, and so far grease and oil just wipe right off.

thanks BigTEX, and you too BIRDMAN, my dad is much better and resting at home. 9 days in the hospital were not fun for any of us.

i bought a 911 a few weeks ago, and "may" be offered a shot at a friends Lotus. the GTB would be a long (LONG) term project. seems i could just buy a beater GT4 and chop it up to fix the GTB and have stuff left over to sell. i think T Rutlands wants close to $10k for a rebuilt carb 308 engine with no core. trans is another few grand used.

i think it would be cool to make it into one of these....

    Mike~

I didnt know your dad was hospitalised, I hope all is well. My dad lives with us and is 84, I know how it wracks your nerves when they arent well.

I have tried calling the number you posted, but it just rings and rings and then some message answers but wont allow me to leave a message. Anyone serious about the car can call me at 763 516 2082.

Mike, I would love to see 21181 turned into something like that, its pretty cool, and its pretty much what Enzo envisioned.
