Coming back from a trip, a gear in the transfer case (behind the clutch) shattered, and destroyed the case cover.

So far, we've come up with a best case repair scenario (dollar-wise and longevity) to replace the entire trans-axle unit with a rebuilt one. The gears, bearings, and case cover for just the transfer gear unit are apparently hard to find and more expensive than a rebuilt trans-axle.

    Anyone have a better idea?

    Much appreciated!

Contact Bundas (Mitchell) on Fchat. He is in Lexington KY and owns a company that makes gears.

When i had a problem with a bad bearing, top gear, shaft and retainer, i got some great used parts from GT Car Parts in Arizona. Parts about $1200).

I understand TRutlands also has used bits.

    good luck,
    chris

FerrParts has them too. I was there recently when they pulled an intact QV motor out for breaking and I helped them pull the engine oil sump cover that I believe went to another FChat'r.

I'm guessing it wasn't a dumb idea that I collected a good spare gearbox.

When you say shattered, can you show any pics? Any speculations why it did this? I would imagine if it lost a tooth it would take out the whole shebang, but usually something precipitated the event. If the tooth failed from a shearing force, then all the gears in the chain would have experienced the same force, all the way through to the ring gear. If it were a bearing failure that shed particles into the gears that took them out, that would be different.

Some of these cars are over 35 years old now, so some failures are expected. But anything we can learn to help catch things before they disintegrate will be of great help. Sorry to hear what happened, hopefully you'll have it back up again soon.

From what my repair guy says, the bearing for that gear was in bad shape, and the rest of the bearings were not good either. None of the gears showed signs of heat wear, but they were nicked up probably from when the one gear broke up.

On the trip, I noticed some ticking noises coming from what I thought may be the throwout bearing. As it turns out, the throwout bearing may have been the main culprit, because it had a rough spot that you could hear and feel turning it by hand.

I was traveling at about 80mph in 5th when it happened.

I'll try to get pics and post them.

I decided to sell the 308 as is. It was a gamble and I lost. I loved it, but I've got other, better return investments I'd rather make.

Thanks, guys, for your help and input.
