There seems to be an unavoidable eventuality for many of the 308s that are left. Parts are expensive enough that many experienced shade-tree wrenches are reluctant to take on some of the rougher examples as projects, due to the extraordinary cost of parts. Shame to see some of these grand old GTs go to parts themselves. I'm just curious about the origin of the high cost of 308 parts. Is the cost due mostly to the low production volume, or is it more related to making extraordinary profit?

depends on who your buying parts from,I've done alot of research and bought from those that charge to much and it took some time that I found places where it didn't cost me a arm and leg,if interested I'll post some of those places but ferrari chat may block them out, well'll see from this responce if I can go forward on this, there are lots of places that breakdown ferrari's its alot cheaper than you think

No doubt the tooling and setup costs for small parts runs (such as are made for ferraris) significantly increases the per-piece cost. Also, there's not a real active after market for production and sale of quality ferrari parts as there is for ford, chevy, toyota, etc. so supply is more limited. There's also the psychological factor - "it's a ferrari so of course the parts are more expensive." In any case, if your sense is that you're getting ripped off, your intuition is very good!

    It's the brand.

There is a brass key blank that would work on a Ferrari sold on ebay for $5.
The same brass key blank, attached to a bling red handle with a a prancing horse on it, is being sold for $250.

The brass keys are the same, and they both open the doors if cut properly. The red handle added $245 to the price.

As a new owner, I would definitely appreciate a link to these places. I don't think the mods would mind unless you own, or have a self proclaimed interest, in the sites.

    Thanks!

Hmmm....I'm on the tail end make-over/refresh of a mid-year '86 Porsche 928. This started as a slightly rough looking, good driver that has come around very nicely. Its not a Ferrari, but the refresh parts cost has been absolute chump-change as compared to what I've seen referenced for the same operations with a 308. I would like to get into this community, but won't be able to without some approach that circumvents spending the kids college fund. That being said, the cost of admission is what it is. However; If the mods are getting upset over posting of parts source information that runs contrary to exclusive sponsors, I would suggest that some visit Rennlist.com as a model of how information sharing can work without unnecessary information filtering. The refresh cost of vintage Porsches can get very nasty as well, but I discovered that it didn't have to necessarily be the case. Im sorry if I'm out of line. I'll spend more time watching/learning for the time being.

I was just last night reading Hemming Sports and Exotic Car. They had an article about the 1980-1988 TVR Tasmin 280i. Three things caught my attention as I was reading. The first thing was that despite the fact the car has a whole lot of Ford and Jag parts sprinkled about, the windshield is specific to this car. So TVR had a windshield mold made. And they supply replacement parts. The second thing is that the number of these cars made was low, 1,167 cars made. About the same as the 308GT4, roughly (not on par with the Corolla, for example, or even "rare" cars like 360's etc.).

OK, so a 308 windshield is somewhere between $1200 and $2500 depending on your timing and luck. How much does a windshield cost from a little tiny car maker located in the sticks of England - in a country (USA) where they sold so few cars that 99.9% of Americans have never even heard of the entire make? Well, Hemmings happens to list it in the "Parts Prices" sidebar: $395.

How is it that TVR can sell a windshield for 1/3 or less than Ferrari?

Already some good posts here, but to some extent the 308/328 are the ground level when it comes to Ferrari parts prices. I.e., if you think $1200 is expensive for 308 window glass, you won't enjoy the 360 price list.

FChat has probably the best information sharing I've seen in terms of parts cross references, etc. We even have Verell on here who remakes "unobtainium" parts in some cases.

Overall, though, I would say that Ferraris -- and all exotics, probably -- are always going to be expensive to own and maintain relative to normal high end cars (BMW/Merc/Porsche). It does take some discretionary cash to play in Ferrari-land. I don't see this changing, given the relatively small production numbers of these cars. People try to draw parallels between Porsche and Ferrari because they both make sports cars: I've had both, and they're just completely different cars from manufacture to design philosophy to spares.

308's are cheap. The parts are not. I suppose eventually, more rough ones will be parted out which help parts prices and could also raise the value of cars that remain. An equilibrium of sorts will develop.

excellent post, i salute and thank you. i dont see why the mods would care, i will buy from our sponsors if i can, but i would not be at all happy with "censorship" !

we should have a choice. check out the sticky parts and cross reference threads. some parts came from other , more common cars.

Price new BMW or Mercedes parts; 308 parts are cheap and you get the dust sitting on them for free...
