On behalf of Jim Walker and the Michigan FOC, I am posting the itinerary of Jim's party/education session next Saturday 7/26. This will be a great time, so please RSVP by Tuesday 7/22 if you plan on attending. Thanks, Jerry.

THE EDUCATION SESSION -- probably about an hour's worth with time for
    questions.

    1. How do you set posted speed limits if safety and the lowest accident
rate is the goal? (Hint: DON'T paint the lowest numbers on the signs you can
get away with.) What is the 85th percentile speed method, and why is it the
    safest?

    2. Who is often the safer driver, the one at the posted speed limit or the
one 10-15 mph over the limit. Why?

    3. How much do actual travel speeds change when you raise or lower the
posted limit by 5, 10, or 15 mph? (Hint, it is NOT by 5, 10, or 15 mph.)

    4. How do Michigan State Police administrators promote the safest possible
posted speed limits? You can download the Booklet from the state police at
    _www.michigan.gov/speedlimits_ (http://www.michigan.gov/speedlimits) to
see the science. If you have seen some speed limit increases on numbered state
    highways, this explains why.

5 The state law on how local speed limits can be set was changed on
November 9, 2006. If you want to read the new law in advance, use the Michigan
Legislature link under _www.michigan.gov_ (http://www.michigan.gov/) and
    follow
the links to see the combined Michigan laws for sections 257.627, 257.628,
and 257.629. What were the key changes and how do they help?

    6. How can you contest a speeding ticket if the posted limit might be
illegal? (I won a ticket this way in January, though Ann Arbor is appealing
    their
    loss.)

    7. How can you research an unrealistically low posted speed limit and ask
for a review? How else can you make your voice heard on unfair posted limits?

    8. Where does the money go from a ticket and why do judges want a high
    conviction rate?

    9. Do you know that the National Motorists Association brought down the
National Maximum Speed Limit in 1995? There is a lot of information at
_www.motorists.org_ (http://www.motorists.org/) Follow the links on speed
limits, photo enforcement, and many other drivers issues. I belong to this
group and I will explain why I do. I have been studying this issue for 45 years. I've worked with the State
Police to help change the laws and the public attitudes. The tide is changing
in favor of realistic speed limits and we can all help.

    LUNCH AND FUN, until ??????????

I am planning to suggest a couple of routes for the last part of the drive
to here -- maybe one from the metro area and one from the west -- though the
roads in the thumb leave a LOT to be desired for interesting driving. (It is
FLAT around here and the original surveyors really liked the one mile square
    grids.)

Plan to arrive anytime from 11:30 - 12:30 and we will fire up the grill when
    folks arrive.

We will do the study session right after lunch and we have our Nespresso
machine here for those with a taste for fine European coffee.

The menu will include chicken, brats, dip with veggies and chips, salads,
munchies, corn, fruit and ice cream, and soft drinks. Feel free to bring adult
    beverages to have responsibly.

For those that want to stick around awhile, we have a beach, a paddle boat,
a row boat, and (wind permitting) our Tartan 27 sailboat in Port Sanilac.
(The boat was built in 1967, 2 years before our Ferrari.) There is a park
about a mile south with a good playground for kids plus great ice cream. The
shallow water is stony here, so water shoes are helpful for comfort, and bring
a towel. The water temp depends on the wind - if it is calm it is warmer
near the shore, and if it has been windy the water will be cooler. The Huron
Shores Golf Course is just south of us. There is a craft fair at the Port
    Sanilac museum that weekend.

For those that might stay later or want to stay overnight in the area, beach
fires are fun, the Forester Inn just south of us makes good pizza and steaks
for dinner, and there are fine restaurants in Port Austin (about an hour
north) called "1884 The Bank" or a gourmet one locally "The Van Camp House" in
Port Sanilac. There will be music at the park in Port Sanilac on Saturday
    night.

Please email us with any questions and do let us know if you plan to come.

    Regards,

    Jim and Molly Walker

    Jim and Molly,

I hope the weather cooperated and your party was a success!

Thanks for yor visit, a few weeks ago. I have framed the poster you brought me from the FOC meet, in Toronto. She's a pretty. :D

I was happy you drove your 365 GT 2+2. I had forgotten the low, lithe, feline character of the car. She sure is a beaut!

    MY Best Regards...Paul

I am glad that everyone enjoyed themselves -- we had a great time hosting everybody.

I hope that everyone takes the time to carefully read through all the material about speed limits. The more people who understand the science behind setting and enforcing speed limits for SAFETY, not for $$$$$$$$$$, the harder it will be for speed traps to continue to exist. And do feel free to contact me with any questions about the issue.

A funny "small-world" coincidence happened. We belong to two private bed-and-breakfast clubs where we sometimes host other members overnight in our two homes, and we can stay with fellow members in their homes. We try to stay with club members when we go places with the Ferrari because it gives us a secure place to park the car overnight, plus it is a LOT cheaper than paying for hotels. We had club members coming to our home in Ann Arbor on Monday evening. It turns out they were the same people staying at the lake with our neighbor Cliff at 3216 Lakeshore -- the double wide at the end of the same lane to our cottage. If they had gotten out their membership book and looked at the listing for our cottage at 3226 Lakeshore, they would have realized we were the same people they were going to stay with in Ann Arbor. It sometimes is a very small world.

Thanks again to everyone who came.
