Hi guys, I have always liked Patek Philippes and am ready to buy. The problem is that I don't really know anything about them. They seem to vary greatly in price without, seemingly, much difference between the models. Obviously the ones with "moon phases" and other interesting dials are much more expensive (though I still don't see why they are $ hundreds of thousands) So, if you could tell me what's out there, and how to pick one, that would be awesome. All I know at this point is what looks good. I want a slim, elegant, conservative, classic watch. Rose gold, with brown alligator strap. Other than that, it's wide open. Any help appreciated. Thanks!
Wow, you must be getting a better financial package! Maybe I should have given CLS more consideration. It's not a recruiting accessory, is it? Just curious. Darth was suggesting I get a nice Cartier or something for interviews. I'm holding out to get a new watch until I can get one of these: Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
BTW, Darth550's wife sells high-end watches, and so does new New England area Fchatter GN360 (who just got his Ferrari last week). Wayne Skiles aka G-Force also does too, but I don't know what he stocks.
I like some of the "Calatrava" models or the 5035 with day, date, month. I was thinking of trying to get one in Switzerland, though the dollar doesn't buy anything anymore. Again, I just know what looks good to me. But maybe that's all that matters...
Zack, expensive watches are like cars and women. Buy what you like. Don't over analyze the situation. Personally, I really like the Rolex Daytona with a gator band. But what I like is not the point. What do you like? Dale ps I'll admit that I don't like wearing the Daytona on the streets of NYC. People get killed everyday for a lot less than that.
Dale, i wouldn't worry about it that much. The folks that will kill you here are probably wearing Rolexes themselves and usually don't carry a gun.
I agree. Back on topic. Zack, buy what you like, not what we like. I would warn you that buying a very expensive watch at a young age can work against you in the corporate world. Especially come review time... Cheers, Erik wearing a very simple datejust looking for my next target...
I would probably not wear a watch of this value come recruiting time to be honest (I mean, a $1-2k Tag or Omega is one thing, but a PP like this is big time). I wouldn't want to gamble on the reactions of any hiring partners who see that you're wearing a considerably nicer watch than theirs. They could [probably very rightly] think "this guy is already doing well, is well connected and will bring us a ton of business in the long run." Or they could get jealous and envious. Then again, maybe this is just for out-of-work wearing and maybe you're not going to go to a BigLaw, maybe you've already got something set up. I'm not saying don't get the watch, just use it at the right times.
Something tells me that Zack will not have a problem with this. He is more likely to be interviewing you or I than the other way around. In my case, it will probably be my exit interview... Dr "Riding off into the sunset" Who
Zack, Just a thought: Buy a vintage Patek or V&C and have it overhauled by the factory. They provide this service. You will get a better watch for the money and the style that you seem to be describing. Swiss watches are like Italian cars - the modern stuff has better performance but the old suff has more style. Good luck! Art S. PS. Buy a minute repeater - subtle but oh so cool!
i like pateks too. currently the best prices will be in the usa on older watches. and with pateks the age makes no difference. i do think that the brand does make a difference in what you should choose. i have a perverse way of thinking of these things, but i always try to buy something that can be flipped at pretty close to cost (or higher) if need be. so i buy good location real estate, older already depreciated ferraris etc. i happened to be in singapore during the financial crisis there in 98, and since i love watches i spent some time hanging around some of the antique watch dealers on orchard road. and as i was standing there, people were coming in to hawk their watches for cash (this happened multiple times).... the shop owners would only buy 2 types of watches, rolex or patek. rolex because everybody knows them and they have become a symbol for success. patek, because they are the best. never mind that iwc, or franck mueller, or lecoultre, or glasshutte, langen&sohn make equally good watches (some say better)....but since only watch people know them (and all the other obscure low volume makers), the dealers didnt want them. so if liquidity is an issue, and you plan to spend a lot of money, then buy either money rolexes (daytona for example) or patek. if none of this matters to you, then have a look at franck mueller. i love his banker model.
I have a 5035 white gold. I love it. It will only increase in value. You should be able to pick one up on ebay for $15-18K. Bob
i too have a white gold/black face 5035. it is a great watch and only people who are into watches know what it is. i have had it now for about three years and haven't had any problems with it.
ZJPJ, Check out this link also. I have quite a few watches including 2 PP's and I have bought several though Watchnet and have never been disappointed with the condition or overall quality of the watch. http://www.watchnet.com/
One of my favourite dress watches would be the Jaeger Le-Coultre Reverso, with rose gold case and black leather strap. Here are several varients, including the classic Duo and models with added complications. DOWN! Maybe not in 1-2 years, but this ridiculous bubble is going to burst sooner or later. Pricing of Patek makes Ferrari look like a bloody bargin.
