Age 83
I was just thinking about him last night. He was a real American icon -movies, cars, philanthropy, morals, on and on. He spoke his mind - not like the putty-brained celebrities of today. I met him back in the mid 70s during an SCCA weekend at Bridgehampton. He was racing D Production with a Bob Sharp Datsun 260Z. That was the combination to beat back then, Newman, Sharp and a 260Z. Imagine how blown away I was when, as he was walking through the paddock back to his motorhome, he stopped to admire my '62 Austin Healey 3000. We had a nice chat. I'll always remember that day.
What can you say? This man was one of the coolest car guys ever. I had the pleasure of a two minute conversation with him in Long Beach one year and he was all that and more. RIP PL Newman
