Sad for PL, but a great way to "commune" with a place that is special in his heart and a place that he is special in theirs...
For a man that has given so much of everything from charities to racing to entertainment, this is very sad news and the world will be lesser for the loss.
Very, very sad. A great actor (though humble man) whose movie career spanned what, 50+ years? A tremendous humanitarian, and a damned good racing driver. He certainly will have left his mark, and he's had one hell of a ride. Let's hope the prognosis is wrong.
Good for him although the cancer diagnosis isn't really a surprise. Saw the first report about it about a year ago.
+1 I'm reading a play right now, PICNIC by William Inge. From page 4: That put a nice smile on my face. He would have just turned 28 and looking at his IMDB resume just starting out in TV. He's had a pretty wonderful life.
What more can you say about a man like Paul Newman? Enjoyed life, was successful and helped others along the way. More of us should take note...
Evil Kneivel, Paul Newman, Charleston Heston and it looks like James Garner is gonna be next. All my heros are dead or dying. Glad he got some last laps in.
A great human, great for motorsports. He will be missed. Shiny side up, Paul. May the horse be with you.
From time to time there appear on the face of the earth men of rare and consummate excellence, who dazzle us by their virtue, and whose outstanding qualities shed a stupendous light. Like those extraordinary stars of whose origins we are ignorant, and of whose fate, once they have vanished, we know even less, such men have neither forebears nor descendants: they are the whole of their race. Jean de La Bruyère Paul Newman is indeed one of these extraordinary people. I wish him and his family great peace in his final days.
The racing stories that people have told me about Paul Newman are so funny. From all I have been told he's an everyday guy. I respect people like Paul Newman. I knew that he was not well. I am glad hear that he gets to do a few things like this. Matt
Late 80's we would stay at Mid-Ohio in motor homes. Hang out in the pits way late by all the hospitality and transports. Garner and Hackman drunker than skunks. Staying with PL. My wife is a looker and Hackman is trying to pick her up. With this crazy hat on, she didn't know who he was. Funny stuff from there. Another PL story. Back about the same time the upper paddock was unused grass. At an obscure back gate sits Carl Haas on a pit bike with his ever present cigar. I pointed this out to my wife and she asked what he was doing there. I said he was probably waiting on PL's helicopter to wisk him through the crowd. She said she was going to wait. I gave her my lighter and said he needs a light and I went back to the garages. Well PL arrives in a car and Haas scoots him down to his motor home, then comes back for my wife and delivers her to where I am. He didn't want as light and my wife met PL.
