I always respected P.L. (as he preferred to be called, at least at first) for his dedication to the sport. Unlike other actors who tried racing, Newman really went into it full force, and I came to regard him as a racing driver who acts, rather than as an actor who races. Among current racers, I would put Patrick Dempsey in that class, although he is not as accomplished, at least yet, in either category. (Is he still even acting?)

And Newman's dedication to racing went beyond the driving; he and Carl Haas put together a pretty decent race team in Newman-Haas, don't you think?

(P.S. An SCCA corner worker I once knew said that, as far as they were concerned, Newman's initials stood for "Pigeon Legs"! He said that Newman just wanted to be treated like any other racing driver.)

Although he never got as far in racing as PLN, I think James Garner's commitment was right up there with Newman's.

If he had stuck with it longer, I'd agree; he certainly showed that he had talent. And I'd rank Steve McQueen up there as well; finishing 2nd at Sebring (even if Revson did most of the driving) is no small feat.
