NPR reported the police are saying the car was going at least 80 mph when the driver lost control. (It was on the radio so no print source.)

It had to have been 80 plus for the car to look like that. Really sad for his little girl. Everyone who knew him loved him.

whats with this nonsense that cgt should only be driven by experts?

what about the simple notion not to drive beyond your limits?

i have great safe fun driving my cgt at 7/10ths. driving beyond one's limits is what gets you in trouble.

As far as I know, US law actually prohibits roll cages in passenger cars. (I may be wrong about this) This is the reason why the Porsche GT2/3 can be ordered with a cage from the factory in Europe, but not in the US.

A specific type of steering fluid trail from a leak all over the ground of the path the CGT was traveling on the road, perhaps??

Maybe ones limits for a specific chassis. But you cannot drive a CGT the same 7/10s as 599 GTO. You know darn well the CGT is a different animal, like driving a piece of plywood. Here is the car earlier this year.

That's exactly what was mentioned here on the radio this morning.

I'm sure the accident report will not be any well kept secret so perhaps we can hold off on the speculating and debate surrounding potential causes until that is released.

Yes it's very possible that he lost traction on existing fluid that was already on the road. I think there are people trying to protect the driver and potential lawsuits against his estate so they are trying to place the blame elsewhere, although I personally believe the driver was speeding and somehow lost control, even if it was from a slippery spot on the road.

Porsche couldn't be getting worse press this week.

First they are now linked to Fast & Furious in a bad, bad way. Not a good way like Skylines or NOS. Second, they remind folks of James Dean dying in a Porsche. On top of that, everyone is discussing the drivability issues of the CGT that have been in the automotive press. And the topper is now it appears they will get rumors of quality issues as well:

What's the law on a mechanical failure if you're going 90 in a 45 MPH zone?

With all of the safety parameters that are beyond our control, tyres can delaminate, components can fail and safety aides wont necessarily save you, hey you can switch them off anyway, it is perhaps vital to remember that only cautious, methodical use makes driving safe. Especially when cars have so much power available. How often do we hear or read Clarkson or any car tester saying damn the traction control and yet when you need it, YOU NEED IT.

I personally believe that supercars will always be available somewhere, in some shape and while not forgetting that the last well publicized death in a CGT was Rudl's @ Fontana, I personally believe the men of this world will always move towards running these cars, with full safety gear, on a track and be quite safe inside their roll cages while doing so, witness the non - fatal 200 mph crash of a Honda at Bonneville this year. The boys will unfortunately continue to kill themselves.

RIP indeed and hopefully the lessons will be learnt and if one or more boy-racer chooses to slow down as a result then perhaps there is at least some silver lining to this dark cloud.

    Tesla dashboard FTW.

But yeah, I feel it's more driver error (speeding) more than anything.

The roads in the middle east are super slick. You could do that with just about any stock/low horsepower rear wheel drive car with ease.

It does seem to be the opinion of many however that the CGT can be a handful.

a power steering leak could cause the back tires to lose traction and the car spin.I am sure you could still steer but it would be difficult.

    That was "60 minutes".
