Jeez, hadn't heard that story making the rounds yet! (Off topic, but Hugo Boss was getting that same negative press about Nazi ties from Russell Brand recently!) This isn't good for the car enthusiast community or sports cars, but really bad for Porsche in particular. I guess a sliver lining for FChat is this wasn't a Ferrari.
one of the guys at the charity event said they heard the turbos kick in....that thing was turbocharged? now that is a dead wish...I cant imagine handling that car with boost
Was probably the same guy who was afraid the car was going to blow up in that unfortunate video from the accident scene that should not have been released. People can ( and do ) say just about anything in these situations. Let's wait for the facts to be uncovered and reported. >8^| ER
I did a drive a few years ago from the Auto Gallery out to Malibu with one of the car's former owners. (There were five. He owned it before Graham Rahal put the black wheels on.) I talked to him a little bit about the car and he just raved about it, but made it clear that the car was very demanding and is "unforgiving". RIP, Paul Walker and Roger Rodas. Is this the same car? I saw it in Beverly Hills in early May 2011. It's the only red one I have seen in LA so I thought it might be. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Not sure. The car was purchased by the original owner in Beverly Hills in 2005. Second owner purchased the car in L.A. in 2007. (That's when I saw the car on our drive.) The third owner purchased the car in Texas in 2009. The car then went to Florida, then Indiana, then back to Florida, where Rahal owned it. The final destination was back to California when Rodas bought it.
I presume you know The Stig is / was Michael Schumacher. If Michael spun the car multiple times I think it safe to say the car is way beyond the abilities of all but the most experienced professional race drivers. Which might be another way of saying it handles horribly.
Pics of cars in Paul Walker's garage. FWIW, he had a pretty rare BMW M-1... Porsche GT3RS, Ferrari 360CS, etc, etc. (Shows the CGT, but they think it is not his). Here: Yahoo!
I presume you don't know that revealing Michael Schumacher as The Stig was a joke played out in one episode where they featured his Ferrari FXX and he drove the lap in the costume of The Stig. It wasn't unheard of for them to use a stand in for the driving duties, but Schumi was definitely not in the role full time and was not the one to loop the CGT multiple times. The hot shoe behind the wheel at the time was Ben Collins, who played the role of The (white) Stig in the early years, with bits of that CGT looping story relayed here: The Stig | Ben Collins | The Stig's five favourite cars >8^) ER
The identity of the original "Black" Stig, Perry McCarthy, was exposed by a Sunday newspaper in January 2003, and confirmed by McCarthy later that year. The black-suited Stig was subsequently killed off that October in the series 3 premiere, and replaced in the following episode by a new White Stig who lasted through series 15. In series 13, the show jokingly unmasked the Stig as seven-time world champion F1 driver Michael Schumacher. In the hiatus following series 15, racing driver Ben Collins was revealed to be the Stig in a court battle over Collins' impending autobiography, titled The Man in the White Suit. In series 16, debuting in December 2010, Collins was replaced by a second White Stig, whose identity has so far remained secret.
one of the reasons i like the carerra GT so much (never been in one though) is that its a challenge to drive. It is such a 180 from most fast cars today with launch control, auto trannys, traction control, etc... that it doesnt take a real skilled driver to get them to run fast times. I get the impression that it will take a lot of work to run off a good lap in a carerra GT bt when you do it will be very rewarding. This accident does not change the fact that if i could have any super car ever it would be the CGT
Stig was not Schumacher although he may have sat in a few times. The Stig was Ben Collins who published a book about it a couple years ago. The Stig being Schumacher was a publicity stunt about four years ago. Once Collins wrote his book he was forced out of the role of Stig. Nobody is allowed to know his real identity. They are currently on their third real stig. The first wore a black outfit. Ben Collins was the second, and nobody knows the third to this point. I do not recollect who the first Stig proved to be but I believe he also wrote a book about his adventures. That doesn't mean that the car was any easier to control. Collins is a hell of an amazing driver and whoever was driving that CGT had their hands full. PDG sent from Io, innermost moon of Jupiter
Ok, so my post was a bit slow as I was typing while the others posted. PDG sent from Io, innermost moon of Jupiter
It exploded so fast they had no chance. Full tanks of fuel, I dont know if the tanks are mounted mid engine in the CGT but in the older 911s they were up front.
I'm shocked to be honest. Many many many people on here who would cast a stone at this poor driver who made a mistake on the public road and killed himself and Paul Walker. Are you telling me you never ran over the speed limit? Never ran that car that pulled up beside you on the interstate? Never took your Ferrari, Porsche, Mercedes, Honda, or Ford over the 100 mph mark? This was a tragedy, and a terrible decision on the part of the driver, but when it comes down to it s*** happens. Sadly this s*** took the life of two people. Grow up people and quit acting like you're holy.
Fuel tank in the Carrera GT is mounted inside the carbon tub, behind the seats and in front of the firewall. It is a stainless steel unit and you can see its placement in the images below. Also refer to this cutaway drawing of the car. http://www.seriouswheels.com/pics-2006/2006-Porsche-Carrera-GT-Cutaway-1920x1440.jpg >8^) ER Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
No Turbos on the car. As one of the best if not the best car sounds made I would assume people could mistake the whine for a supercharger or a turbo spooling. Interesting while I love my CS I will grab the keys 9 of 10 times for my CGT. RIP gentlemen. A very sad day for sportscar enthusiasts.
Just from reading articles and what his co-stars were tweeting. Paul must have been on great guy. Seemed to just make friends with everyone he worked with. Tyrese and Paul must have been great friends. He was really distraught. I'm not sure why, as I rarely get bummed about celebrities who pass. But I'm a bit sad about his death. I think it's one of those things that's so far out of left field...
