But, the specific car is easily identifiable due to my unique license plate.
A nice picture may be all that is requested or owed.
I am realy just opening up this thread to discuss the many variables in the question of photographing cars and the ethics involved when the car is not your own.

It is funny how a car can become a celebrity.

OK, the plate is the giveaway - that makes sense.

Funny, it can sometimes benefit the owner to have his car attain "celebrity" status (i.e. "the car featured in Road & Track", or "appeared in the movie XYZ'd") It may even increase the value of the car for those potential buyers who covet such things, since it is now a "known" car.

I had a long conversation with Breck Rothage today at the Art Center Car Classic. He is a photographer of some note and a great guy.
He said that his policy is esentially this: if he uses an image of someone's car to either make money selling the image or advertising his services He compensates them.
He give them a copy of the picture or something commensurate with the use.

If on the other hand he simply uses the image to report on an event he went to, such as a car show, there is no compensation.

I agree completely with this practice. He also said much of his thinking has to do with the uniqueness of the car. the more unique the car the higher the compensation.
Now let's see what the other photographer says. He indeed used an identifiable picture of Prance so we'll see what his philosophy is!!!
