PC is a desktop, P4 3GHz, 16 months old or so. We ahd plenty of problems before (motherboard, CPU fan, sound ...), but now here's a new error. When just using Windows, the screen goes dark (puter still on). So I reset the computer with the good old button, and on start up, it goes in the BIOS and tells me something about last startup having an improper CPU speed and that I should set it back to what the hardware says. So from there I select 3000GhZ (my only choice other than "Manual"), but it will bug again later in the day or the day after ... this time I made sure to set all the Bios crap on Default .... we shall see. Thing is, I never (obviously) played with CPU speed ... just typical windows stuff, internet, music, Pshop ... etc Don't tell me the motherboard is going (again) or the CPU ... that would be annoying. BTW - haven't found anything relevant via Google, talks about voltage fluctuations, CMOS, jumpers ... just about everythign appears to be the culprit, and I don't understand a damn word!!!
SAVE ALL OF YOUR IMPORTANT FILES TO DISK NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It sounds like the CPU and motherboard are mismatched in speed, are you sure the right one was used when it was replaced? Glad all your files are saved, that's a crash waiting to happen
Well, it was quite a while ago since they changed the motherboard, several months, but the problem only arose recently ... matteo ... powersupply? are you talking about the box where the 110V goes in and mistery electricity comes out? How do you update that??? the issue with hardforums is that they talk in bits and I understand ... well ... bits (bad pun, I know)
matteo is correct in that an inadequate and/or faulty powersupply can cause random and inexplicable errors. But before you try swapping that out I would jot down your current BIOS settings and then powerdown and pull the CMOS battery for a few minutes then put it back in and reset the BIOS to the settings you had prior to pulling the batt.
$10 ??? you buy a 10 buck supply and you're asking for more problems than you have now Get a good brandname supply like an Enermax or many others with atleast an output of 350-400 watts minimum.
What brand is the PC? My first thought is the BIOS is fubar. Try reflashing the BIOS before you look elsewhere. You need to know what system it is and/or what what mainboard is in it prior to flashing.
The guy doesn't know what a PSU is, I wouldn't suggest reflashing the BIOS! Can you get a digital camera and take some pictures of the BIOS settings? The PSU could be the issue, but it could be a hundred other things. Can you give me full specs on the system?
It's been awhile That's how much they were back in the day. Hell, I don't even know how much bread or milk costs

I thought you were due for gender reassignment in the latter half of February. How good are the magazines in De Clinque de Venusio?
The problem "changed"!!! Now, Windows will only start in Safe Mode ... in normal mode, it will just turn into a black screen ... and nothing will happen. Doesn't sound like a power supply issue any more, to me at least... As for the specs , the MB is an Asus P4S800-MX (it's an HP exclusive board ... for some reason, the PC isn't an HP, assembled by some canuck manufacturer called Axess), processor is a P4 3GHz, one stick of 512Mb RAM. Power supply is an HEC-300AR-TF (300W) that specifies Pentium 4 ready ... plus the array of graphics board (NVidia something), 160Gb HD, DVD burner and CD. However, as I opened it to look for the name of the MB ... the damn thing is filled with dust!!! 2 months ago, it was getting opened (and clean), and now it is cluttered with dust. Sooooo, I may have found my problem. Yeah, the CPU radiator is clogged with dust, the intake grill is as well ... I do feel like a dumbass (although I never thought it would get that dirty that quickly!!!). So, considering the new problem about Windows not starting up, and apparently all caused by lack of cooling ... have I fried anything? Or am I good just cleaning it up? Is it still the PSU? Yeah, I really do feel like a total dumbass ... edit - I cleaned it (bring out the air compressor, biatch!), Windows still wouldn't work, did a system restore, it restarted on its own correctly, but there's still a huge gap when Windows starts ... first windows logo, then a black screen and no activity for what feels like an etenity (20-30 seconds, perhaps) ... adn then carries on like nothing happened. It's a minor issue, now.
