I lost the left speaker, at first I thought it was broken/ blown etc but the head phones left ear won't work either. I was jigging around with the speaker settings yesterday but didn't even see anything relater to balance L/R let alone adjust it so what could it be? Any quick ideas before I buy a new pair?

try unplugging it and plugging it back in. If that don't work get a new sound card.

A sound card can "short out" a speaker? Good enough for me.

Not really, but under strange circumstances it could I guess. You said the left side of the headphones won't work either, so my "guess" is that the left output of the sound card is defective.

If you wanna play with computer settings double click on your speaker icon on the bottom right of the computer screen. It should pull up a window with sliders for volume. Above that will be the "balance". Make sure they are all set to the middle.

I'm on Vista and I have to go into control panel for the balance, it doesn't appear in the icon in the toolbar. Thanks again.

If headphones don't work either, sounds like a sound driver or just a general bug problem. Try muting the sound, then closing it out. Then opening it back up and unmuting it. Still doesn't work? Remove the device from the device manager, refresh and let it find the drivers again.

I would spray the input hole with non residual contact cleaner.
