I'm looking at a couple of 328 models. The 1987 with 75K miles that has been used as a daily driver for the past eight years has nice red paint with visible silver "Ferrari 3200 quattrovalvole" on the aluminum intake unit cover sitting on top of the engine. See picture below. The other 1986 model with 35K miles has been babied since new, always garage kept, and driven about 1500 miles per year. But the red paint on its engine intake cover is significantly peeling and flaking. Sorry, can't show picture because file size is too large.

Now I have confirmed odometer mileages with Carfax and Autocheck, and I will look at the cars' service records. Also, the condition of the interior of the 35K miles car is consistent with its history and odometer. Seats and dash are nice. I have only seen pictures, but pedals don't look worn. So what's the deal? Why is the pampered low miles car the one with the peeling paint on the engine? The 75K miles car might have had its engine detailed and repainted. Anyone know if this happens more as a function of usage (miles), age (year), geographic location (temperature and humidity) or totally random from car to car? I've also seen a 1989 60K driver 328 with black paint significantly peeling from the underside of the trunk right over the engine, but this seemed at the time to be related to high use and wear-and-tear on the car. But this is the only 328 I've seen with the trunk underside paint peeling so it seems less common.

    Common problem with the series.

I put it down to simply poor paint technology of the time. Heat ressitant paint over alloy in the day was not that great.

Today's heat resistant paints like jet coat, POR 15, Hirsch have much higher temp capablity over all kinds of materials and it's fairly easy to redo the intake plenum.

I wouldn't consider it any indication of mileage, use or wear. The original paint simply couldn't take the heat or the expansion of the alloy the intake is made of.

The 75k car probably repainted the cover. I repainted mine and it turned out great & was pretty easy.
