    All,

I know I search threads and all of that but I first wanted to introduce myself and then find out about the scene. My family and I are going expat to Penang for a few years and we are currently active in the local Ferrari Club of America chapter. Anyone familiar with the local Penang scene? Cars and coffee location? Is there a dealership or service facility near by? Would it be worth my time and expense to bring my 355 over or is it too expensive to have one in Penang? Any help is greatly appreciated..

    thanks,
    Sonny.....

    Hello Sonny,
There are quite a few Ferrari owners in Penang but few ever visit this forum while a few from nearby Ipoh do posts. Most of the experts in maintaining modern exotics are still in KL but as long as one is willing to invest & learn the diagnostic tool, it wouldn't be tough.

The few main roads in Penang island are quite tight & usually busy so you're far better off heading to mainland for a weekend blast. If yo're applying for MM2H retirement program, you can import one or two cars tax-free otherwise a used 355 is about US$100K here now.

The KL owners are quite active though & the best part about this country is you can really maximise your Bhp ;)

Great thanks for the info Jon.. I will be on assignment for a few years, so I am not sure if tax laws or import tax? Would be worth it in the long? My company will relocate the car over for me but I would be on my own from that point with registration etc. I guess it's food for thought. Thanks again for the info.

Anytime. It will not be possible to import a '95 car as it's either 5yrs old or 25yrs (classic) or if you apply for retirement/relocation programme. If I were you, sell your 355 now then buy one over there if you still want a Ferrari but they are not easy to re-sell in Malaysia.

Otherwise, just get a normal car & perhaps a Porsche will be easier. Have you visited Penang yet? Lots of good food for your senses :D

Thanks... I will probably just store the car here for a few years and have my father in law run it around the block once a month or something...

No, I haven't been to Penang yet.. I am headed over next week.. I'm pretty excited about the move and exploring SE Asia.. Not to mention a bunch of F1 races that would normally be too far to get to from the states...

heya there and welcome to Malaysia,

Well there is a club in Penang which is quite active i think...Not F-car exclusive but I'v seen them around here a few times with mostly F-cars....as for the name, I think its called the Penang Exotic Car Club or the Northern Exotic Car Club (i could be wrong here).....so in regards to if they have an active scene there, i suppose so, just based on their convoy whereabouts here and on the North South Highway.... (well how i know this is that they must be pretty proud of their club as they have huge ass stickers on their doors/fenders!)

get a 355 here i would suggest....you could always resell them and they have pretty much hit their bottom price in terms of depreciation......unless you take up the My2nd Home programme under the government, you will need to pay some tax on your current car and i suppose that you don't plan to stick around too long, so doubt you will enter that said programme (and even if you do, it might not be now i suppose).......

by the way, Penang is a brilliant place.....everything is nice there except the drivers who're pretty much the worst in the country!!!! ahahahahah.....but i'm serious! besides that, everything else is top notch especially the food.....you could always come over to Ipoh which is 1 1/2 hour away for better food though!
