Does he self-sponsor the team via his business empire?
I'm pretty sure he's still got Marlboro money coming in. I think he was forced to move away from the red & white livery to placate the do-gooders, but IIRC his deal with them is thru at least 2012 (?) Cheers, Ian
Right, but I read somewhere (I think one of the threads here) that one of his cars doesn't have sponsorship.I know the whole Marlboro deal, so I guess my question is more about when you see 'Team Penske' on the side of the car, is that just an ownership perk, or are Penske Enterprises doing any funding. At this point, I would think Penske, Inc. would be one of the larger sponsors in IRL. Penske's situation is a bit different from most in that he runs an automotive empire worth billions and could realistically bankroll the team with little sweat. Supposing he DOESN'T put any money in, think about that arrangement. Marlboro pays your ticket for a veiled sponsorship while your name and company benefit for free from the association.
+1 But also, some will correlate 'Team Penske' with Penske Truck Rental. There may be liability issues (of course) from having Penske Truck Rental' on the car(s), but the name alone triggers your memory. There also may be issues with an owner legally sponsoring his own cars, I mean, in nascar, no team owner or driver technically 'owns' the car, I have seen them 'owned' by the team owner's wife or the driver's wife on the official entry forms.
Marlboro is still paying for this interm season. Next year he has Penzoil in a return to a yellow livery.
Pretty much Phillip Morris keeping up thier end of a contract (Much like with Ferrari in F1) for a cloaked appearance on the cars & transporters after gov't's killed thier normal chance of advertising. More a matter of PC going amuck!
Verizon Wireless is a main spoonsor too The whole Penske racing teams were at verizon corporate today. Rodger, Helio, Ryan Briscoe, Will Power and sam Hornish Jr. too. The had Powers IRL car on display too. Got my Indy shirt signed by all the IRL drivers and Penske too. Phillip morris is still a sponsor too .. just no name reconition Funny fact. I tried to by my son a race shirt ifrom the souviner trailer but couldnt. They dont carry Childrens shirts because of the Phillip Morris sponsorship. The law states children can be associated with tabacco in any way. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
very cool! I've seen The Captain at many races over the years but never got to meet him (at least, not yet). one of my heroes....
Roger Penske did not make his fortune paying for his own race programs. He adopted the Aritotle Onassis philosophy of business: Always use other people's money, and always have a tan. When you consider sponsor money, tax write offs to promote his baseline businesses, Roger makes money on everything he does. Except getting married.
