F1 is a political nightmare, and has all kinds of silly rules. If it is to be the top series, it should be closer to formula libre, and damn the expense. Personally, I rather watch sports cars, and would prefer Ferrari built LeMans type cars than be involved in F1.

Paul Tracy's move is motivated by money. In american racing, these days NASCAR is the place to be money wise. Even F1 doesn't pay as well unless you are a superstar. In NASCAR the earnings are huge for just running in the top 10, a no-brainer if money is what you are looking at. That being said i don't think Tracy has too much of a future in NASCAR but that's just my opinion

I called CART the American version of F1 because these guys actually do real road courses and street racing. Certainly it is not F1, but about the closest we have here. I realize IRL does now more than just ovals, but the mix is still way too much on the oval side, which is why I compare them to NASCAR.
I'm not necessarily against ovals, I just find it boring when you do most of your races in one. I always admired CART for the mix they do. I wish F1 would do a couple of oval races and a couple more street races. Maybe with Michelin gone, they could try? :)

Absolutely agreed. April 29, 2001. That's when CART/CHAMPCAR lost me forever. I hope that the series eventually fails completely.

Open wheel racing in America needs to be run under the IRL, on both road and oval courses.

You're kidding, right? 2006 will be IRL's desparation year. Honda's not going to support them forever.

Tony George has done more to destroy open-wheel racing in the US than CART ever has. ChampCar is essentially a new series with almost no ties to the old series, except for cars and tracks.

Friendly suggestion: get over your hatred for CART, because ChampCar will be the survivor.

irl/champcar - pffffffft who cares? both pathetic. (everybody pissed now?)

As earlier mentioned, some of the current F1 teams may not be around that much longer......and the sense is that Renault will be one of the next to go, esp. if they could do a 2nd year as champs in 07. They would go in a heartbeat then.

that would allow new team/s; if Penske had put his deal together by then.

Bernie is just using Penske as a pawn in his game with the "breakaway" teams. "You want to form your own series, go ahead, I have teams standing in line to take your place." With Penske, he has a respected name to throw out there, but note that really all Roger has said is "yeah, IF you could win on an $80mm budget, I might consider it." So far I see as much substance to this possiblity as the "Dubai" F1 team. Remember them? :D

All good points and you just made me realize what's behind the latest FIA proposals for 2008: I thought the cost cutting was because Mad Max just woke up one day with that idea. But no, the plot gets thicker: They (Mad Max & Bernie) want to lower the entry ticket into F1 so that in case of a GPMA breakaway series they can easily refill the ranks with non manufacturers who likely have less deep pockets.

Thanks for showing me the light. :)
