I was quite surprised to read, today in July's Car & Driver, that only 40% of Ferraris are red (presumably new ones). When I went through the factory 6 years ago, they told me 78%. Does anyone know the color breakdown of today's new Ferraris? 40% seems awfully low.
    Just asking ...

It has gone down ALOT over the past decade or so. People are realizing that they do not have to be red. Plus many owners do not want red. You see alot more black, yellow and silver now.

    Sounds about right. :D:D

Many moons ago, MOST Ferraris were red. :D:D

These days, Ferrari have plenty of colours on offer and everyone likes to be just a little bit different so red is not as common. :):)

It will probably stay around the 40% from now on IMO. :):)

The auto industry goes through trends in colors. What we've all seen with Ferrari is actually quite typical. When a manufacturer does extremely low production based mostly on racing, then the colors tend to follow the (shall we say...) main advertiser, which in the case of Ferrari is red...

...BUT as the manufacturer's market expands beyond die-hard enthusiasts, the colors produced and sold tend to reflect the popular colors of the target demographic. Consequently, Ferrari has seen a decrease in red, Mercedes and Porsche have seen a decrease in Silver. Aston Martins no longer are only seen in silver or in signature AM Apple Green.

Since red was a very 80s color, high end companies have seen a decrease in red, including Ferrari and Porsche (with Guards Red being a de rigeuer color of the 1970s and 1980s) seeing a drastic drop. Even Corvettes saw Black eclipse Torch Red as the most popular color in 2002. (Red had been the top color since 1984.)

The entire industry saw a huge increase in Sand Beige color in the 1990s and then by 2000, Silver had taken over. Recently blue (both dark and the Subaru-esque electric blue) has come on, but that seems to have hit a wall -- and this last year many car companies have been featuring black (often with a tan or carmel interior.)

I was just at the factory 2 weeks ago.
well over 50% of the cars on the line were non red.
lots of variations of grey (grigio, etc). More than a few white ones.
the line was 458's and Cali's.

most peoples opinion on black exotics is that it does not show much detail on lines etc.

Overall, including all cars past and present, 40-50% sounds about right to me.....not nearly as many of the newer (post 1990, or so) cars have been red. For example, red 550's / 575's are pretty rare, and red 456's / 612's are rarer still.

Some of us don't like red ---- I've owned (6) F-cars over the years, and only one of them was red....had no choice as that was the only color that car came in (original factory paint, that is) ;)

I don't care for Ferrari's in red. I would do either white or brown.

Actually, we should ask how many members here have their Ferrari in red? Mine is/was... all previous 7. But I am old school.

Last year when Car & Driver magazine got in trouble (again) for making stuff up and posting photoshopped images, that's when I let my subscription run out.
