I love the 348 Spyder but need a reliable vehicle for near-daily use - the body is perfect but I can't afford the expensive engine servicing. i know the perfectionists would tell me to sell the body and get a new car. BUT, is it possible/feasible to replace with an American-made engine?

Should be doable but would it be worth it? Keep in mind you could do all required work yourself even if there's a myth surrounding ferrari drivetrains. Check out the 348/355 section regarding servicing of the engine and then decide what to do. What drivetrain did you have in mind?

If you have enough skills to do an engine swap, you have more than enough skills to service the engine yourself taking a huge part of the cost out of it. Seems pointless.

A Ferrari is a Ferrari BECAUSE of its motor. NO other motor will give you the sound and by swapping you lose the soul of a Ferrari.

I agree with Pete that if you can handle the work of the swap, you can maintain the car.

Having said all that, of course it can be done it just takes money and time, money and time that I would spend maintaining the Ferrari motor but if you prefer maintaining the Chevy motor, go ahead, its your car, do what makes you happy.

I doubt you will end up with drastic performance gains so it really is just a exercise on saving maintenance costs in my opinion.

Yep. Getting rid of the Ferrari motor would be defeating the purpose. Just get an American car if you want an American engine. There are plenty of great Corvettes out there that will look great and give you exactly what you seem to want.

It really wouldnt be hard for anyone with the knowledge.. with the knowledge is key. Basically you need an adapter plate for your engine custom exhaust or at least headers...wiring diagram and plumbing the cooling which is the easiest part. There is a guy at Madmechanics forum that makes custom adapter plates..(some of those guys over there can build anything very very talented bunch). That being said by the time you buy a crate motor which will be cheaper than all the other stuff you will need and dont forget labor hours and fabrication , trial and error. All of that time effort and money would go a long way towards maintaining a 348/355. If you grenade the engine you can get a used one for 10g.
If you have to take it to a stealership for even the simplest things it gets expensive. I bought mine from a friend that owns a shop. First thing he said was dont be scared to drive this car. If you break something bring it in we will fix it. He said its just a car..its nuts bolts and wire. People act like these cars are so difficult. Not so theres nothing on this car we cant fix right here.
There is also a lot of good information right here. People here will help you if you get stuck on something..
You could look at a replica as an alternative. Theres a guy over on Madmechanics that has the most accurate 355 spider replica in the world. Bet you could pick it up for between 30 and 35k

Whatever direction you happen to take, please don't ruin an unmolested Fiero. There are plenty of half-baked projects available instead.

So you can't afford the cars servicing.. But you want the car.. And think that by putting in American engine in it its going to be a Toyota?

Bwahaha! If you have the time and expertise to do an American muscle swap? Please.
    Just do the job yourself.

Can't afford the Ferrari parts but own the car? Here's a clue.. Anybody can buy a Ferrari. Not everyone can own one. Start a business or get a better job so you can own one if $1000 in parts is too expensive. You can even get rid of that fake Rolex and buy a real one...

Sorry guys.. I can't take this post serious.

I don't like these kind of rude comments. Please have some manners.

You should have said (using all caps to indicate shouting):

    SIR, ARE YOU NUTS?

It seems I looked at some 308s in the ninety's...wasn't somewhat common. I mean within context. To put small block chevys in 308's? Seems like I remember seeing 2 or 3 for sale like that

There was someone on this site down south some years back that did a conversion of a chev into a 308 using a Pantera ZF gearbox. Turned the motor the correct way. It was a pretty good swap but he was shamed off of this site. I talked to him off line years ago and he said the swap worked out great.
