If you were to stock a bar for your home. What would you fill it with? Which liquours would you fill it with? Try to be specific, and give some sort of reasoning.

Yeah but he wanted to know why??

    ;)

For me personally it would be as follows:

    Pendleton whiskey
Good vodka (grey goose/ kettle one or similar)
    Irish cream (Bailey's)
    Kaluha
    Tanqueray 10 gin
Some good beer (I prefer IPA's)
some mixers (coke, tonic, water, etc)
    Lemons
    Limes
A small but decent selection of good wine

This is my list because this is pretty much what I and my friends drink and is really what I try to pretty much have in the house all the time.

I imaging things change in different locations but in Miami its all about Patron, Capt Morgan, Vodka, and a little Whiskey

Make sure you have lots of lemonade, cranberry juice, Coke, 7UP, & other mixers, a LOT of ice & a bartender helps too

Is this a bar for you, or for general entertaining. To be complete, you probably need a couple of each different liquor, in addition to appropriate mixers. You are going to get responses for either each posters favorite spirit, or the one most popular in their area. For generalities, you ought to stock a blended scotch, and some reasonable single malt. Similarly, a more generic American whiskey, plus something special. And so on.

Good luck. If you really want to disappear down the rabbit hole, you end up trying to sort out which things mix best with which things (for example, I think Old Raj, as well as being great straight, works great with Fevertree tonic, but not as well with mainstream tonics).

+1 of the Old Raj gin--though not necessarily a crowd pleaser.

I was thinking more for general entertaining. I try to purchase a bottle of something everyweek. That way restocking the bar is relatively inexpensive.

Whiskey: Bourbon to be specific. Neat, Sazerac, Old Fashioned. Buffalo Trace, Basil Hayden, Knob Creek. Stagg, Bookers, Pappy for the special neat drinkers.
Vodka: because hopefully women will join you
Beer: Micros like Fin de Monde, New Holland, Heineken, etc, and cheap garbage like Bud Light for the neighbors.
Rum: because there has to be something for the teenagers to steal.
Scotch: for the Father in law. We like Dalwhinnie and The Dalmore
    Gin: for the crazy Aunts
Absinthe: because sometimes you need to see the green fairy, and it coats your glass for a Sazerac.
Wine: -$30 Pinot Noir, Cab, & Chard for the crowd. Good Pinot, Cab, CA Rhone blends, Syrah, Red Zin, Rhone for just the two of us. I keep a 300 bottle cellar.
    Bitters & simple syrup
    Mixers: cran juice, lime, etc.
Shakers, stirrers, plenty of nice and different glassware.

    Vodka:
    1) Russian Standard Imperia
    2) Nemiroff LEX

Reasoning: These are of the top Russian and Ukraine vodka's that are readily available, period. Taste and texture one needs to experience to discover that they have been drinking rubbing alcohol prior to these two.

    Whisky:
    1) Crown Royal (for mixing)
    2) Crown Cask No. 16 (sipping)

Reasoning: These are bourbon whiskies, not scotch. Crown is a readily available top tier whisky that is smooth as is flavorful. More-so with Cask.

    Rum:
    1) Pyrate

Reasoning: Smooth, flavorful rum in a serial numbered hand blown bottle. I find myself pouring just one more shot glass of this rum.

    Liqueur:
    1) Baileys
    2) Kahlua
    3) Tuaca
    4) Zwack

Reasoning: It's good to have mixing alcohols for coffee and such, these 4 will find creative uses in the home bar. Zwack is a much tastier relative of the rancid tasting Jagermeister. Catchy drink name to offer in the midst of select company is, "Would you like a Zwack Off?"

    Champagne:
    1) Moet White Star
    2) Martini Rossi Asti

Reasoning: White Star has a very rich, satisfying taste. Asti, the ladies will love it.

A good gin, for Dry Martinis and GT's

    Absolute Level Vodka
There probably are better vodkas, but I like it and, a bit patriotic, even if it IS owned by a French company

    Single Malt whisky
Lagavulin for it is my fav malt. Very peaty
Glenlivet Nadurra 16 as a smoother malt

Matured rum - prefer drinking rum as an "digestif" rather than a drink mix.
    Rockley Still 16yrs (Barbados)

    Matured Tequila
Patron Anejo. I like it, even if some people in the tequila thread didn't like it.

    Campari
Campari and orange juice is a nice summer drink

    Pimms
Pimms with Sprite and a few slices of cucumber is what "all" Brits drink in the summer
