Performance of Fchat w/ v. w/o cookies

I've noticed lately, that I've had to activate my cookies to get into the Other Off Topic forum section. I've also noticed, strangely, that if my cookies aren't activated I only see some posts in a thread. Finally, I've noticed that without my cookies activated, text I've typed and submitted as a post at least partially disappeared.

First, has something technically changed recently to require cookies?

Second, my symptoms seem inconsistent and strange to me. Either the site should work fine without cookies activated, or it shouldn't work at all. Not a tech expert, so I'm happy to hear from those who are.

I have only a basic understanding of the uses of cookies, but until recently, I never activated them (or only as necessary). Logging in without cookies still allowed me to see which threads had been posted in since my last visit (as they were in bold text). Until recently (a couple of weeks ago, maybe) I could still see this for all other sections without cookies once I'm logged in, but I was unable to log into the Other Off Topic area whatsoever unless my cookies were activated. BTW, even today w/o cookies on when I'm logged in, I can still see the bolded thread titles.

Regarding posts in threads, I've seen a bunch of posts suddenly appear that I hadn't seen prior. Maybe they were there, and I didn't see them. It's possible I suppose. However, I've recently seen some threads disappear without explanation (on another forum). And, I've had some issues with lost posts and edits to existing posts (even one today). Very strange, I thought.

I'm using Safari on a Mac, btw.
