Has anyone ever chipped the ECM on the QV? Is there any known risk in fooling the computer to force more fuel at higher RPM?

Yeah, the best performance upgrade is the t instead. ;-)

But seriously, I've never heard of anyone hacking these ECUs. Not saying that it hasn't been done...

The guys at Norwood built up a 3.2, now owned by Dizengoff. So work can be done, but you might be better off swapping out the QV for a later 3.2. I don't know that just an ECU remap will do much. I have not heard of many tuners for the older cars. But if you can 'add fuel at higher rpm", the worst is you will run rich and slower.

The t is a completely different animal to drive. It shares running gear with the 348, but has power steering and adjustable suspension, while adding some weight.

    Regards,
    Jerry

I have tried to get chips burned for other cars but it was hopeless. These cars MIGHT benefit from a couple of degrees timing bump but that only works if they run on 87 Octane right now. I never checked because I always use 93 in my 3.2. However, you can not rotate the distributor to get timing advance since the spark is flywheel triggered.

One project I did was advance timing on 1991 MK VII from 10 to 12 (or perhaps even 14 degrees - I forget). It made a quite noticeable bump in power below 3,000. However, because I was using 7.5 psi supercharger I needed to install a boost timing RETARD for rpms more then that. Otherwise milk cows, family pets and innocent bystanders were in mortal danger from detonation ;)

    PS:

There might be some hidden power in your car if it has not been driven vigorously over the decades. This was certainly the case with my 3.2. When I first got the car I did my customary symulated 1/4 drag race speed (speed indicates power - time has other variables).

Long story short, I use lots of carbon cleaner in strong strengths over thousands of miles as well as add 8oz of 2 cycl oil for the mechnical fuel injection. And never warmed the car up at idle, and generally ran 3,000 and above. After a few thousand miles it certain ran and idled better. Did my little test and I have NEVER seen such an improvement. I mean, from about 80-82 mph up that hill to perhaps 86-88 mph.

That is astounding to me. When I got the car two years ago I only considered it good enough. Now it seems exactly about right for a mountain runner! There might be professional carbon cleaner people. After all, I have driven 10,000 miles in the last two years to get to this prrring machine. But every time I run for any length of time between 3,000 and 6,000 it feels refreshed next time out.

Lets be honest here. Theres not much too work with in a QV engine that was underpowered in the 2 seat version of the period. That being said there was a member here who built a 350 HP mondial at considerable time and $ so it can be done. Searcing for a few ponies by modifying an already finicky electrical component opens doors for headache down the road IMWO

I seriously considered a belt driven centrifugal supercharger. The unit cost about $6,000 and installation another couple of grand from reputable source. Might have added about 50 -75 or more hp depending on the drive pully. I decided it was not worth the time and possibly the trouble. In the mean time my 3.2 got significantly faster on its own. Apparently with simple methods.

These included lots of carbon cleaners - multiple uses of every brand on the market plus 6oz of 2cycl oil every tank, and more recently Marvel Mystery Oil. That and driving 3,000 - 6,000 rpm on a regular basis over thousands of miles. That would be my first exploration - decarbonization.

On the Mondial T there is a relatively easy upgrade.
The power train for the "T" is the same as a 348.
If you can find the engine ECU PROMS from a 1993 348 Spyder there is a 30 HP gain over the 300 stock HP.
    Plug and play.
Try getting 30 HP from any engine this easy. That's 10%!!!

There is an english company that will program a set of PROMS for you. You need to indicate the octane of gas you will be using and a few other parameters. I think it is about $900 for the set of chips.
I don't have the URL right now but if anyone is interested I will look it up.

There may be a US company that does this as well.

This is ONLY for the "T" version of the Mondial.

I don't have an ECU anymore; it's carbs and a distributor adapted from a Ford flat head V8.

I don't even want to know how much was spent on this car to build it into what it is.
