Performante RWD Conversion?

    Been thinking about trying to get my Performante down to the same power to weight ratio as a 570SL coupe. Need to lose 200 lbs. and gain about 20hp. The RWD conversion supposedly saves about 140 lbs., exhaust would save maybe 30lbs., and an EVOMS and the right exhaust would gain about 30hp.

    Should I do it?

    SL coupe - 2955 dry weight
    Performante - 3275 dry weight

    I don't drive any of my cars in the rain anyway.

    I do not think the additional HP is worth the effort, you will gain must from the weight loss.

    You may also want to consider that the RWD 550-2 cars have a completely different suspension set up, due to the loss of the FWD and weight, so you may have to get that corrected to make your converted AWD car handel correctly at speed.

    The other side is re-sale value, keep in mind, for the most part any and all cars that have been altered from factory specs will always bring less money then an orginal OEM car. SO at the very least, keep all the parts, so the car can be brought back to OEM if a future buyer wishes and it brings the money.

    I always keep all original parts whenever I add anything aftermarket. What is your favorite exhaust for the LP570's?

    I converted my 04 to 2wd last september. I like the conversion. I like the steering feel much better now. Car has less understeer than it had before. Car even rides better due to the reduced unsprung weight of the halfshafts.

    Just thinking on the Performante that I might be removing too much weight from the front. The added weight of the Spider, would mostly be behind the driver, with the top mechanism. I can only find about 30-40 lbs. of rear end reduction with a Capristo or other exhaust.

    So what do you do to compensate for removing 140-150 lbs. off the front of the car, when all you can do is remove 40 lbs. off the rear? Have heard the car must be lowed a bit in front using the adjustable dampers, then it must be aligned?

    Might just drive it stock for a while, then decide later. Some have been able to remove the 4wd system without breaking anything, and other's are ordering $400 parts when removing the half shafts?

    Nothing is broken removing the system only thing is have to take apart the halfshaft which could be put back together.

    I didn't lower mine any. It didn't look noticeably higher after removing the weight. If you think about it 140 pounds yes most is off the front but no different to having a light weight driver alone vs a heavy driver and a heavy passenger.

    You don't need to change alignment if ride height is not changed. Car can be lowered slightly in front if need to put back to stock height.

    RE the suspension bit; get LP550-2 specific front springs. I wouldn't be at all surprised that that is the only different part of suspension between the -4 and -2. Far too much cost in R&D otherwise for something that needn't be improved.

    I'm not sure why people are ordering $400 parts...all you have to do is remove front half shafts, front differential and driveshaft. Plug the bit where the driveshaft went into and presto....2wd Performante. And of course fit the LP550-2 front springs ;).
