I'm teaching my 3rd daughter to drive. She is early on, learning to drive an automatic transmission car.

She pulls into a parking lot and going slowly, BUT NOT STOPPED, puts it in "Park". A terrible metallic sounding "bang" and a sudden stop punctuate the event.

What kind of symptoms will appear it its damaged? It seems to run and shift perfectly.

BTW, its a 2005 Volvo S80. It surprises me there would not be a lock-out to prevent this from happening.

It sounds like the parking pawl in the transmission got jammed in there and took the stress of stopping the car.

If the car doesn't hold in position in "Park", then the pawl pin got broken.
