Okay, I apologize in advance for asking another mundane radio-related question, but I need guidance. I obtained a replacement wood console for the 365 gt4 (the original had been quite hastily cut to accommodate a DIN unit) and subsequently purchased a period Becker Europa II to install (with iPod connection). Low and behold the radio was configured for a Mercedes, not Ferrari, but the problem is not the universal mount per se, it's the shaft distance. Apparently, the shaft distance on my console is 5 3/4 inches, but the Europa II is only 5 1/4 inches and the shafts are not movable. My limited research shows all period Beckers and Blaupunkts to have shafts with a distance of 5 1/4 inches. I'm left with either finding a different period/new radio with appropriate shaft distance--this is where I need guidance--any suggestions??--or alternatively (and with great reluctance) considering cutting two new holes in my replacement console to accommodate the 5 3/4 shaft spacing. I'm loathe to cut, but am wondering if I should consider it as an option. Thoughts?

Thought it might help to clarify that by shaft distance, I meant the distance between the volume and tuning dials.

Gregg, check those shafts again. I know the Blau 3000 (period correct model) had shafts that moved.

Dave, thanks for jumping in. I don't have the radio or console with me, but I am told that this is a no-way, no-how type of fit. The spacing is just off by 1/2 inch. I will try to post photos if I can. Do you think the wood consoles were factory or dealer cut? I note that there is a metal plate under the wood console that is also pre-cut and both metal and wood cuts are very clean. Does not look like an aftermarket hack job at all.

What do I think? Well I don't know but I think they were factory installed. Look at the picture from the Pinin catalog and you'll see they show the plate and the console precut. What does that mean? Not much as I'm sure you know there aren't any absolutes with the 400 series cars.

I can tell you that if you search the 'net for radios with adjustable shafts you will find some out there. I've bought a few and been pretty happy with them.

Now having said all that I can tell you that both of my 400's had rectangular cut-outs so you could put in new high dollar modern radios that sound good. I had/have Alpines with remote controls in both my old 400 and my current one.

I think the knob spacing was set at the Factory also.......

When I cut that section out in my 1977 car to fit a CD player the fibreglass of the dash had a matching metal plate in it, to establish the radio format.....

I'd send the unit back and explain the problem rather than hacking the wood panels.

Surely they can build to those spacings????
