I can never quite understand why people buy plates with their car make/model in it - be it a Ferrari/S44B/M3/X5, why ?

Rick, I think it just sets apart the car from the rest. It shows a real interest, a personal touch. Sometimes its tacky, but some are pure class.

OP, I'd go with what others have said - buy direct from the DVLA. I dont think they sell non-prefix/sufix other than at auctions. The auctions can be a giggle - ive seen some silly cheap and silly expensive plates go. It only take one other guy to like 'your' plate, and it'll go through the roof! If you're lucky, you'll get a bargain and a sound investment.

Agencies are p!sstakers. I don't believe they own most of the plates listed - I looked on newreg to see comparisons for my wifes plate to gage the value and guess what..they were listing it as for sale! Tossers - a very snotty email later and it was removed. All I can imagine is they put the lists out and if they get a bite, they approach you with an offer.

I had MON814L on my Mondial and rang up New Reg for a quote. They offered me £494 for it. I sold the car with it on and have since seen it advertised for £15,000!!!!!!!!! More than the cost of the majority of the cars it'll go on. I recently bought HCT 430. Looking to sell it in the spring!

All these registration websites a just trying it on. I think that the most expensive numberplate ever sold in the UK is K1NGS for £75k. They are just playing it up with all those astronimical prices so that they can drag the cheaper ones up.

The plate on my 355 is 420*** shame they didn't they call the new F430 the F420. It might have made me some dosh!!! I know its the engine size but that's still no excuse...

Why do people buy plates then chop sections off letters or numbers, presumably to try and make those letters and numbers look like others. It makes me cringe every time i see these pathetic attempts of "personalisation"
Does any one know of the worst example of junior hacksaw butchery.

Totally agree, and it really winds me up too. Why doesn't plod pull them and take the number off them. You see it everyday. Today I saw B16 RDN chopped to look like BIG RON. It's so sad, as well as being totally illegal.

I went to one of the reg websites that allows you to put in a reg and it tells you if it is registers and when. Just went through my initials until I found one that was not registered (4 RJP), sent an email to the DLVA to ask them if they would include it in an auction, and about 9 months later they wrote to me to say they had put it in. Looked like there were 3 bidders. Recon they wait until they have a few people requesting the same number, so was thinking of making multi application for my wifes initials :) If they put it in and I am the only bidder this time, should get it at reserve.....

    Dear Comrade RichardP,

In my experience the only problem with doing what you are suggesting is that the DVLC will place a high reserve on the number.

Why do you let this wind you up so much? You say that that it's totally illegal but so is speeding, I've never seen a dodgy number plate kill anyone though!

    I'll get me coat.

This is true. I think it is the "naffness" that winds me up, and the way people use black dots or yellow to mis-represent their number. Also those that use incorrect spacing. For example C200 JW which should of course be C20 OJW. If they really want a JW plate they should go and buy one!

This is definitely on my list of things to go in room 101.

    Disagree Guys

Probably because I like turning 8's into B's on my plates!:D

Given the major restrictions on plates - compared to the States - I think it only natural that people will try and use some artistic licence.

Each to their own I say, what harm is it doing, after all it gives plod something to do when their not doing us for speeding!

    Live and let live.

    Cheers Kevan

I'm with you, its a bit of fun and as long as its readable (not like some of the italics you see) no harm done. As far as plod pulling I'd be much happier knowing plod is concentrating on serious stuff and stop penalising reasonably law abiding people! In the States you can have pretty much whatever you want, I saw a Vette in Florida with 'thanks dad' and in Vegus another with 'ta-pa' both individual and instantly recognisable to plod if necessary. Leave us motorists alone!

I agree that in the States you can have more or less want you want. I had LUTON FC and SKYDVER on my cars when I lived in California. My mate had BOLLLOX on his Corvette. But we are not in the US, and as such should stick the UK regulations of font and spacing.

I puchased a car with the number plate 71 D I was supposed to transfer to a newly assigned plate but did,nt bother. I eventaully got stopped by the Police in my local high street. When the plate was checked it came up as belonging to another vehicle. I pleaded ignorance and they advised me to change the plate ASAP.
What is the fine or penalty for incorrect plates in relation to the cost of your absolute best personal number plate for as long as you get away with it. I obviously do not condone breaking the law, this a hyperthetical question only.

I see what you are saying. So to use my earlier example of B16 RDN being displayed as BIG RON. Rather than spend £2000+ on RON 123, purchase B16 RDN for £250 and hope you will not be stopped. If you are, you will most likely get a warning, or perhaps fined £100 or some similar amount. This is probably why so many people do this.
