after a non start issue that resulted in a new battery being installed i tried to start the car to no avail. just a slight click from the starter. before attempting to removing the starter i thought i would try my bosch wolfsburg starter assist tool # 0U812; better known as a 4 oz. ball peen hammer. i judiciously applied it to the starter and solenoid. voila. the car started right up. the question now is what hung up the starter in the first place and when, if ever, will the thing fail again. when this condition occured in the old days with my vw kombi it was easy to just roll under, apply a tappy tap tap and go merrily on my way. sadly this will not be possible with the qv. if it wasn't such a difficult task i'd pull the thing and check it but i'm to lazy to fix something that may not be broken. laying on my back under the car is no fun. if it happens again i suppose i'll take it to the shop and put it on the lift. seems it would be much easier working over head. i'm just curious as what would cause this to happen.

The starter solenoid has a relay function applies full battery voltage to the starter motor. In times of 'faint click', a oil coating has covered the relay contacts or the contacts are baren.

A Bosch Wolfsburg starter assist tool # 0U812 severs to jiggle (technical term) those contacts, breaking the oil film barrier so that full battery voltage will bring the husky starter motor into action.

Of course you could hang the Bosch Wolfsburg starter assist tool # 0U812 over the starter with twine and extend a rope onto the gear lever soas to easily yank the aforementioned BW SAT #OU812 in times of great need. Or you could just sit in the driver's seat and keep the mileage low (unchanged).

There is nothing inside the car such as an errant relay or bad ignition switch or flaky fuse which could be the culprit. If you hear the click at the starter, and the new fully charged battery has tight connections, both at the battery and at the starter, time to change the starter solenoid.

I like the alternative Italian engineering method with the customized remotely mounted starter assist tool. Hey, it may not be concourse but it will get ya home till you get tired of it.
Uh, does that come WITH the installation instructions, Paul?

Exact thing happen to my Lancias, ones in a while the bendix drive do get stuck and the remedy is to tap the solenoid with something solid until it disengage.
