77 carbed 308 GTB Which kit is better and why? Can I use the original coils and resistors with either kit? Thanks
I had 9MR-182A put on my 77 carbed 308 GTB. Pertronix Ignitor II. I'm using standard coils, not the Pertronix ones. I don't know if one kit is better than the other and I'm fairly sure I don't know the difference between the two. This kit was recommended to me by the shop that did the installation. They have done tons of Pertronix installs on older Ferraris, so I'm guessing that they knew the best kit for my car. The main difference I notice is that when I had points, the car had some piss and vinegar. When you got going it had sort of a ragged edge to it. With the Pertronix it seems like everything is smoother. Car sounds smoother with a different tone. It still develops the same power and torque. (Dyno test, not seat of pants.) I'd imagine the ragged edge came from the slight differences inherent with the dual points and dual distributors. My guess is that it's easier to get the timing just right with the Pertronix. It also starts and runs reliably and my hope is that it will stay that way consistently. I liked the idea of old school points and condenser. The car would run great, but then there was always something... Got sick of screwing around.
I put an XD-i unit This thing you can program up to 20,000 rpm if you wanted. Not real practical. Mine is set at a modest 7500 redline and it’s smooooooooth all the way.
