Finally got my Pertronix conversion up and running. Cracked a distributor cap so had to get a new one from Eurospares. Also had to get a new trigger wheel from Pertronix. Finally took it for a little drive this evening.

Idles so much better and pulls very smoothly. Found myself cruising 10-15 over the limit very easily.

    Pertronix MR-183
    2x Pertronix Flamethrower II coils
    8x BPR7EIX plugs
Taylor 8mm Spirocore wires with hemi boots - no extenders.

Checking #1 and #5, timing looked to be within 1 degree so I did not try to make it any better. Set timing at 33 degrees BTDC at 6 rpm and let the idle fall were it may. Ended up with ~10 BTDC at 1000 rpm. Of course, I never drive at idle, LOL.

Overall, very happy and worth the $$$.

The Pertronix MR183 is the single best thing I've ever done to my 79 308.

Did you keep using the ballast resistors or remove them? Did you consider the 9MR 182A as an alternative to the 183?

I agree, I noticed a considerable difference before and after. Initially, there were some issues requiring the need to go back and forth between the two sets of coils. In the end, I realized that the majority of the difference was coming from the pertronix coils themselves. Only a slight difference with only the pertronix alone.

I find all of this very interesting because I run a Pertronix system on my Dino gt4 and am extremely happy and pleased with it. I was at a Ferrari repair shop during a tech session on ignition and tuning and the techs were adamant that these systems were a bad idea and if they fail you are stranded and just on and on with negative comments until frankly I was tired of listening. I've owned ancient Italian sports car for years and have converted most of them to modern electronic ignitions with never a hick-up. It's the old condenser breaker point system that has consistently been a maintenance issue. The points and condensers can be of dubious quality depending on where and by whom they are made and the coils were an issue on my car until I switched to the Pertronix units.

Nothing wrong with points, but they only last a short period of time. I agree with the longevity statement, regardless whether it was the CraneCams XR700s I had, or the current Pertronix set-up, it's ALWAYS worked.

I'm planning on trying out a HEI set-up next.

If you install a Pertronix MR183 setup, have a shop check your converted dist on a distributor tester for advance variations between cylinders. The sets i received from Pertronix for different setups some years ago varied up to 4-5 degree between each cylinder, which was one of the reasons i stopped installing them. Hopefully they have fixed this by now.

Right. So you set it in the middle of the diff And it doesn't make a noticeable difference. So one bank is +2 0f target an one minus 2.

Someone slotted the base plate to make that adjustable.

I found my Marelli original coils could throw a spark about an in farther than this flame thowers so I put them back in. Those flame throwers are over rated
