So, got a better gear puller and got the bearing off the distributor shaft so I could install the Pertronix. Got it all back together and noticed that when I spun the shaft, the clearance between the Pertronix "rotor" and the sensors would vary from ~1/8" to just barely rubbing.

Rotor went on just fine when I lined it up and pushed down over stock cam easily.

Not sure what to do. Figure I will get it all back together tomorrow and if all 8 cylinders get a spark, then just drive it.

    Thoughts?

Sound like to much variation. Check the shaft to make sure it is not bent and then make sure the pertronix wheel is seated correctly. Put a dial indicator on both and see what you get.

Do not drive it as is. If the shaft has a "whip" in it, think what the rotor will do to cap. Something is obviously wrong.

    Steve,

If you have a twin distributor set up, try it on the other distributor and compare. Something sounds seriously out of wack. Are you using the MR183 Petronix?

Pertronix 9MR-183. I tried taking it apart last night but can't get a good grip on the bearing with the Pertronix rotor and sensors in place. Only think I can think of is that I hammered the bearing back on too hard.

Will have to see if I can get the distributor apart. AARRGGHHH!

Maybe I should have gone for the Electromotive swap...

    Update:

Got the distributor apart and checked runout. Shaft runout seemed pretty good.

Pulled the front distributor out of the car, took out the innards and mocked up the Pertronix. It was better but still a lot of movement and the rotor piece would vary from ~2mm from the sensor to practically touching. It looks like the rotor piece is not perfectly symmetrical so I am going to call Pertronix tomorrow.

    Update #2.

Looks like the trigger wheel is slightly off center. Talked to Carl at Pertronix and they are going to send me one asap. Awesome customer service.

Guy at a local exotic service shop here who is an ignition specialist told me that pertronix parts have a lot of variation in the manufacturing tolerances. He also told me the cam lobes have a lot of variation from the factory. Remember the pertronix is retro fit so we can expect a lot of variation in figment.
