OK, they say they have traced this to wheat coming from China that the Chinese have sprayed with rat poison, because it's OK to do that there, but not here.
The question I have is, is it possible for the same kind of wheat to make it into the human food chain ?

I thought it was some kind of thickening agent, and the company was a first try for pet companies. So they shouldnt have switched. But I don't think it would be human foods.

Wheat gluten is a common ingredient used as a binder in these mass-produced pet foods. There is far, far less oversight in the pet food industry--standards are abysmally low. I would think that it would be far harder for this to happen in human foods. Testing is much more stringent, for starters. And when a company's food kills a human, the fallout is a bit more severe. When companies like Menu Foods source their ingredients, they purchase sub-human grade ingredients to cut costs. In all likelihood, this wheat was unable to be sold for human consumption for whatever reasons, sat around for a while and became contaminated with the poison used to prevent losing the stock completely to rodents. Although Menu will be happy that they can isolate a guilty culprit, it exposes the fact that they have little or no ingredient oversight or quality control.
