Ok, we complain that Speed's coverage of F1 endlessly discusses tire issues or pit stop strategy over and over. But, I'm watching Daytona today and you would think anyone who follows Nascar would at least know by now after a thousand times of bringing it up what "loose" vs "tight" means. And, what is it with the misuse of the word "good"... the car handles real "good" -- he qualified "good" -- he's doing "good" -- he made that pass "good". Ok, your from the South but you would think that any intelligent person could figure out how not to sound like a 5th grade drop out.
here's mine: the announcers-I like Mike Joy but Larry Mac & DW got old five seasons ago ridiculous amounts of commercial time, esp during green flag conditions too much "infotainment"-too much nonsense on the screen Digger & Friends (FOX only) too many ads during the broadcast, and every segment of the race is sponsored, covered w/ logos on the plus side, there seems to be an infinite number of cameras, NASCAR is very well shot/covered. when they bother to actually play the race
tired of seeing that stupid groundhog jump into the ground everytime they show the low shots in the corners. Someone needs to drop a tire below the line and run over that stupid cartton and put me out of my misery of having to see it again.
If the race has less than 20 laps remaining, no commercial breaks. That damn annoying animated gopher. (During the second red flag when the Nascar officials went to look at the hole, it would have been the perfect opportunity to place the remains of a lifeless, flattened, & bloody gopher puppet from the hole.)
Larry MacReynolds' twangy accent may be amusing/folksy to some but after one of his rambling ten minute "get 'er done" diatribes (during which he talks a lot but says absolutely nothing), I start to desire the sound of fingernails on a chalk board. Keeping in mind the network which covers the Daytonner Debacle, FOX must think the rubes must be kept amused with endless graphics over the screen including "Digger" (which must be the NASCAR version of their even more disturbing "Dancing Football Player/Robot" on NFL broadcasts) and equally annoying pop-up self-promotion ads for FOX shows. How anyone can sit through 8+ hours of this stuff is unimaginable but suppose there are those who do. RM
Hell, last year there were like 5 minute Digger cartoons during the pre-race show for a bunch of races. It is just Fox creating programming for the thousands of children that watch Nascar with their folks. I was surprised there wasn't 20 minutes of "what the drivers' wives wear to the races" for the ladies, but then they do have their own driver now. This is honestly how Fox views the audience. The entire family is to be patronized and spoken down to, right before they are forced to endure a cavalcade of products advertisers have paid incredible amounts of money to place over every possible inch of the screen. I'm actually surprised Fox hasn't figured out that could sell Digger's chest. He could be wearing a different sponsor's logo on his t-shirt every time he appears! Just think, in a few years the numb commentary will die down a little as Fox will figure out that we don't want to see just the product logo, we want to see the product being used. "Boogity-Boogity-Boogity Lets Go racing Boys!" will be replaced by the slurping and chewing sounds of DW downing a Mountain Dew and a fistful of Doritos. Thankfully for Jeff Hammond, Phizer will choose to leave Nascar and have their Viagra product be the title sponsor of women's volleyball instead.
The only gripe I have with NASCAR coverage is there's too damned much of it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I stopped watching SpeedTV. Haven't even flipped past it in almost 2 years now. Amazing how much the Nascar coverage dropped off. The only thing I miss is My Classic Car with Dennis Gage, and I don't miss it that much since I visit Jay's Garage which amounts to the same thing...
I don't think I could ever stop watching SpeedTV altogether but there's just too much damned NASCAR. The only time they show German or British touring cars is on the off season. I hope NASCAR's deal expires with Fox soon, and we can have SpeedTV back to something close to what it was. Shows like Unique Whips and Wrecked need to go too.
Well, I watch an enormous amount of motorsport. It is easily 80% of my entertainment viewing, and I do it all without going anywhere near SpeedTV. I watch F1, GP2, WTCC, BTCC, DTM, WRC, FIA GT, MotoGP, WSBK, British Superbikes, AMA Superbikes, Aussie V8 Supercars, IndyCars and even a small amount of NASCAR. Thank God for BitTorrent and RacingUnderground. I get to watch the stuff Speed doesn't air and the stuff they do air I get to watch without Speed's incompetent and insipid commentary teams. I even get access to races and seasons of years gone by! Kinda nice to be able to toss on the 1975 Bathurst 1000 or the 1988 Monaco Grand Prix for some classic action. There is a price for all this. I don't get to watch live. I usually have to wait a couple hours after the live event for a torrent to appear and then perhaps a couple more to download it. This does mean spending some time on weekend evenings, grabbing torrents and starting downloads, about 5 minutes a night. It's not just grabbing the clicker and seeing which episode of Inside The Week In The NASCAR Countdown To Victory Lane: Boogity Edition is on. There is a level of work and dedication required. That said, I do get to choose when I watch my racing and I can collect an archive of the events. Not a bad deal, I think, for never having to deal with Speed's crap. As for Fox's deal with NASCAR changing Speed's programming... yeah, not going to happen. Even if Fox loses the right to broadcast the races, there is no way in hell NASCAR will take the rest of Speed's NASCAR programming rights away. Speed has been the foundation of NASCAR's rise in popularity for 20 years now. NASCAR adores Speed so much, I'm really surprised they haven't become a partial owner of the channel (officially). So, we're stuck with the 60 hours of NASCAR crap per-week on Speed forever. It's like a bad marriage. When I met Speedvision she was hot, playful and sexy. She was a dream come true. She would do anything, from New Zealand Jet Sprint Boat racing to Florida Swamp Buggy drags to The Reno Air Races. Then I married her and she changed, becoming a fat, demanding cow that expected me to spend my money on her, but only put out when she felt like it, which became less and less as the years went by. I divorced that B!tch and got a hot young new nympho girlfriend with a penchant for skimpy outfits and an insatiable appetite for nookie. I get what I want with a smile and zero backtalk. I'm the luckiest bastard in the world.
Lol, sure sounds like it. I've tried getting on RacingUnderground but you need an invite. I can't find any. I watch the majority of those racing series but it's usually when I can catch a replay. WRC is on Discovery Channel now but the replays are waaaay later in the year. The SpeedTV/NASCAR deal happened when FOX bought Speed. For a while there if you remember they couldn't even say NASCAR on air, lol. Those were the days..(sigh). If NASCAR would sell the rights after this deal expires to say ABC, FOX couldn't show races without a special deal. I don't think it will happen either but one can dream.
My biggest pet peeve is that they annouce the cars & call them by the car's number.... " that number 11 car" that 23 car etc... are they not Chevy, Dodge, Ford, Toyota? etc... cant they say the make.... like : Johnson in the Chevy.... or Montoya in the toyota.... what ever.... I think I'm smart enough to understand they have different engines in the cars..... does it all have to be dumbed down????
I don't care for the gopher either. The thing that is really getting old for me is the whole "down home, good 'ole boy" gig. In contrast, I really enjoy F1, ALMS, and World Challenge coverage.
That stupid f'ing gopher and atleast DW has quit saying "boogity boogity boogity" so much, that frickin gets on my last nerve.
I had a blast at the 500 but I was thinking at the time HOW can this announcer keep talking. Through the entire red flag the guy never shut up.
turned on the TV when the pre-race show began today. then I went to the Post Office (I like to check my PO Box when nobody is there ), Lowes, and Subway to grab some lunch. race still hasn't started. 90 minute pre-race shows? no dice. when I started watching NASCAR back in the late 80's, the ESPN broadcast would come on at noon and the green flag fell at 12:05. let's give that another try!
nuts, didn't see them....but I only watched the first few minutes and last 5 or so (when Andy Garcia gave the command to start engines, for some reason). when were they on? did they sound better than The Who did at the Superbowl?
