in the 1980 Repco reliability run he won the event but i remember that he still holds the record for the Thredbo to Khancoban run, back then it was 80% bitumen and 20% **** mud, he did the 70km trip thru snow and some of the twistiest roads in Aust in i reckon it was 28minutes, i do the road 6 times per year and the best i have done it in in an M3 is 42 minutes, and his commodore was the old 202 red bolck engine...............go figure that bloke could drive, and last year in the classic he passed me in the Elfin and at the bottom of Willunga Hill i got out and ask for his autograph on my track notes. He said they told him in the throughbred touring that 130kph was the max..................he went on to say he could sit on 130kph throughout the whole event if the max is 130 the min is 130!

and the brock vultures on Ebay, like he is still warm

yeah well, i enjoy having 99% of the trees that are around me, i miss them when they're gone (look at ward street now  ), but if 99% of the people i encounter every day vaporised i wouldn't even notice, or care if i did.

nothing against brocky or others who've made their final trunk call, but i vote trees stay.

well, not to condone cashing in on someone else's expense, but look at this crap....

(not that they were cashing in, just that it was already for sale i think - the rest of his similar "v8 legend" items are going for $30 a pop)

    http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270023531634

$4500 for a 9 year old *copy* of a photo of brocky.

the bid-history tells an interesting story... http://offer.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewBids&item=270023531634

    I agree.

PJ O'Rourke mentioned cars and trees too. Mind you, this was after a hard cross country thrash in a Ferrari

"When we got to Atlanta, the band in the hotel bar was the worst thing we'd ever heard. But it didn't matter. Nothing could cloud our outlook. Ralph Nader himself would have been welcome at our table, so infected were we with the spirit of superiority to the humdrum concerns of daily life. I mean this car does one thing. It makes you happy.

And the car did one more thing for me. It reaffirmed my belief in America. It may sound strange to say that a $45,000 Italian sports car reaffirmed my belief in America, but, as I said, it's all part of western civilization and here we were in America, the apogee of that fine trend in human affairs. And, after all, what have we been getting civilized for, all these centuries? Why did we fight all those wars, conquer all those nations, kidnap all those Africans, and kill all the Indians in the Western hemisphere? Why, for this! For this perfection of knowledge and craft. For this conquest of the physical elements. For this sense of mastery of man over nature. To be in control of our destinies -- and there is no more profound feeling of control of one's destiny that I have ever experienced than to drive a Ferrari down a public road at 130 miles an hour. Only God can make a tree, but only man can drive by one that fast."

can certainly turn a phrase... love how he seamlessly meshes in all the accomplishments of amercan society in with it's atrocities. :p

    Hello guys
Just got home from the event and the min silence in Northbridge tonight. It's hard to belive what happened, but he died doing what he enjoyed, which is a good way to go I guess. The corner about 9.0k into the stage and was a left downhill that tightened slightly but was marked clearly with cautions in the roadbook and on the stage as well, so we just ran to the conditions. Road was damp, but not soaking wet. Put a real downer on the rest of the afternoon and all the stages cancelled as the media frenzy got too great. There were 7 choppers overhead within 30 min of the accident and media queuing up to get into the stage. If it had been anyone else, then the profile would have been much lower I guess. Guy rolled an E36 M3R about 20-30 min earlier on the same stage, which is a mess now, but the driver & co-driver were OK. It was Ben Killerby of Killerby wines fame.
Co-driver Mick Hone we understand has cracked hip and lots of bruising, but he is probably the only person who really knows what happened. The rest is just speculation.

Some teams have pulled out of the event, but we'll keep running and enjoying ourselves in the spirit that these events should be taken in. Stay safe on the road and keep on then black stuff...the unexpected can happen to the best of us.

    Andrew

    just to be clear...

The Peter Brock who died is not the same Peter Brock who designed the Daytona coupe.

    Correct?

Yes, the guy who originally designed the Daytona Coupe is known as Pete Brock.

TCT: Definitely not the same person.

precedent - Hehe, I knew it wasn't correct, but was in a rush to work it out.

Why are they moronic? 8 ppl have died recently on the same corner, you would think after 2-3 deaths on the same corner, the tree would need to go? Is 1 or 2 trees really that important over saving ppls lives?

They have no issues cutting millions of rainforest trees/year to make pencils and paper but afew trees near dangerous corners is moronic?? Ahyes.

They dont put trees near racetracks for a reason, even @ monza there is a huge gap between the track, barriers and trees. Im not saying cut them all down, but they dont need to be 1m from the shoulder either...
