I can't say that I blame Peter for being angry about the current F1 situation. I would much rather see him continue in F1 than any one of the new teams.

Sauber’s team future far from clear

Peter Sauber has expressed anger that the future of the Hinwil-based Formula One team he founded in the early 90s is currently in serious peril.

Although sold by the withdrawing carmaker BMW to the mysterious Qadbak consortium, the team does not have a place on next year's grid, after the BMW elected not to sign the Concorde Agreement and the FIA subsequently transferred its entry to the new Lotus outfit.

At that time, the Qadbak deal had not been finalised, and the three currently vacant team slots had already been allocated to the new USF1, Manor and Campos teams. Williams has vetoed Sauber's application for a guaranteed 14th entry for 2010, meaning the Swiss based camp is left hoping that one of the new teams' plans fall over in the near future.

Peter Sauber, who maintained a 20% interest in the team throughout the BMW era as well as a consultancy role, called the situation with F1's new teams "a joke".

"They do not have to prove anything and yet they disturb our plans for next season," Sauber told Blick.

Sauber suggested he is angry that the fate of an established team hangs in the balance while some of the new teams might quickly come and go.

"Perhaps the four (new teams) will have cars in Bahrain, but will have run out of money by 2011," he added.

The team's preview of the Abu Dhabi season finale said it hopes to keep racing in 2010 "under Peter Sauber".

Current team boss Mario Theissen, the BMW motor sport director, has said he is not ready to announce his plans until after the 2009 season is concluded.

no need to fret...one of those new 'teams' will not be there, cough PW's team cough..

but still, an established team shouldn't have to sit around wondering...and to have Williams block their entry...hmm...do some of these dudes just not like each other?

Nothing personal, just business... and desperation. But I´m afraid that Frank Williams´ bad karma will bite him in the a** sooner or later.

An unfortunate (and I assume unintentional) reference considering Sir Frank's accident.

Todt and Peter are best friends from back when both were running Ferrari powered teams.

I'm sure Jean will make it a priority to separate the wannabees from the real ones when it comes to the new 3 teams.

So far only Lotus has a car. Of the other two allegedly one doesn't even have an engine.

It really is a travesty that a historically significant team like BMW/Sauber will potentially be left out in the cold in favor of a half-assed startup. And all because Max played a game of brinkmanship with them.

It would be asinine for F1 to deny an established team a slot on the grid, especially during these economic times.

I think the FIA is trying to keep Sauber/BMW around as a safety in case one of the other 3 don't make it. That is supreme arrogance and displays an utter lack of any knowledge about how a business has to work.

    Don't worry Pete...USF1 won't be there ;)

Anyways, i find it appalling that Sauber was overlooked, while the new Malaysian team was immediately granted a slot. Sauber has been a around since the early 90s, i think they should deserve more respect from the FIA.

That's fine as long as it's something he'd do for any team and not just one associated with his old best friend. We don't want to see Mr Todt applying any sort of favouritism.

Why? They've never ever been here nor there, nor will they ever be here nor there. So, why exactly do they deserve respect? No wins, no poles and no fastest laps in 12 years of racing not including the BMW years which sucked far less in far less time, but still sucked, and loudly overall.

So why should they be respected? Showing up for ten billion years and having near as makes no difference, nothing to show for all that effort?

Max gave them the respect they earned, and not one iota more than they deserve.

When Frank talks, you can see Max's lips moving.

    BMW Sauber -- FOTA member.
Williams -- in hock to FIA.

The problem I have with Williams is that if their attitude was prevalent back in the seventies, their own team would more likely than not have never got to enter F1.

I can only suspect that they feel that new teams would be less of a threat to them than Sauber with Ferrari engines.

It's interesting to see Ferrari themselves saying that it's fair enough to reject a brand new team with no guarantees of being viable or competetive from entering as a 14th team but as Sauber are already well established, there should be no problem with it.

Personally, I agree with Ferrari, I've always had a bit of a soft spot for Sauber (possibly because I see them as a bit like a Ferrari B team, especially after their c23 resembled the F2003-GA and Ferrari made no complaints), and have earned the right to be there after all these years.
